They say opposites attract, but unfortunately that wasn’t the case for bubbly bride Selina Chhaur and laidback groom Cody Bromley on Married At First Sight.

While it might have seemed like they were off to a good start at their wedding, things slowly started to feel slightly awkward for the couple as they spent more time together.
But, when New Idea caught up with the groom himself to talk about his time in the experiment, he told us there was a good reason why he appeared to be uncomfortable with his bride.
“For me, it was always just awkward having other people in the room, and physical affection or any form of PDA I just suck with,” he revealed.
He went on to explain that watching the show back, he realised while he doesn’t appear to be very comfortable with Selina, once the camera crew left, it was a different story.
“When the camera was on me and I was trying to be affectionate it just felt so unnatural and I can see why other people would look at that and be like, ‘he’s just putting it on’,” he said.
“But it’s just me. I just get awkward showing any form of affection when there’s anyone around. It’s as simple as that.”
Describing it as a “funny dynamic”, Cody said having to do everything on camera was something he struggled with often, fearing he would come off as “pretentious” to his bride.
“When the [camera] crews are there and you’re trying to do something nice to your partner, it does almost feel like you’re putting it on for the TV series,” he said.
“But you’re trying to sell yourself to the rest of Australia as opposed to selling yourself to your partner. So, for me, that was one of those moral issues.”
Deciding to then go ahead and “do those things” once the cameras had left, Cody reflects on the situation with regret. “It wasn’t the approach we should have taken,” he said
Despite initially appearing “standoffish” on camera, Cody said he and Selina were able to get closer and move past some of their road bumps.
“We always got along really, really well. We never had an issue with that,” he said. “So, for me it was more that romantic connection.”
“Excusing that, we were very compatible, we got along so well, we never had any issues, but it was just jumping from that friendship barrier.”
During Intimacy Week, the pair were finally able to cross that road, and moved out of the friend zone once they shared an on-screen kiss.
Just while it seemed as though their efforts on the show were successful, Selina and Cody announced their shock split at the Reunion.
The pair arrived together for the first day of the Reunion at the Dinner Party, but broke up within hours after leaving.
“We – Selina and I decided to call things last night,” Cody revealed to the experts, with Selina adding: “Don’t say we. It’s new to me too.”
When Mel Schilling asked who ended the relationship, Selina said it was his choice and the split had happened when they returned home after the dinner.
“I really wanted this to work but I just thought to myself throughout the experiment, yes we had some really amazing times but we also had some shockers so we never quite lost that habit,” Cody continued.
“Last night it got to the point where Selina was [trying to hold my hand] but to me that felt very forced and it was just a realisation that it’s for the best.
“She needs someone who can show her [affection] and I can’t.”
Selina was left tearful and heartbroken on the couch, even more so when Cody confirmed they were done for good.
