It’s the TV comeback viewers have been hoping for ever since 2018.
Now, with Yvie Jones’ schedule freeing up after she was let go from Channel Seven’s House of Wellness following two seasons, could the door finally be open for a Gogglebox Australia reunion with Angie Kent?
The besties were widely regarded as one of the funniest and most authentic duos ever to grace a Gogglebox couch.
And the timing couldn’t be more perfect because, a TV insider tells New Idea, “Network 10 is looking at ways to keep one of its most dependable entertainment franchises feeling fresh.”
However, while 53-year-old Yvie’s exit from Seven potentially removes one hurdle in the way of a return, Angie, 36, has built strong relationships with Channel Nine through her TV work there in recent years.
Our source believes those connections could complicate Gogglebox reunion discussions.
“It’s not that anyone wouldn’t welcome them both back,” explains our source.
“There are just commercial relationships and commitments that would have to be worked through.”
Although Gogglebox remains one of Ten’s safest performers, it hasn’t escaped the broader decline affecting free-to-air television programs.
When the series launched in 2015, it regularly attracted close to one million viewers, making it one of Australia’s most successful reality formats.
“Everyone accepts TV isn’t what it was 10 years ago,” an insider tells New Idea.
“The goal now isn’t to reinvent Gogglebox; it’s about giving audiences another reason to tune in live.”
Bringing back fan favourites is a sure-fire way to boost ratings.
“Yvie and Angie are always at the top of that list,” says the insider. “They had this chemistry you simply can’t manufacture.”
And if Angie is unable to commit, “don’t rule out Yvie being paired with another friend. Every option is on the table.”
Meanwhile, fans shouldn’t hold their breath for the return of another much-loved couple. Tom Walsh and Wayne Mott are understood to have no interest in returning.
“They absolutely loved the experience,” says the insider. “But they’re very happy living life away from television.”
There are also ongoing calls for the Silberys to make a comeback.
And while Kerry and Isabelle remain hugely popular, insiders acknowledge the family dynamic would inevitably feel different following the loss of beloved matriarch Emmie, whose warmth and one-liners became an iconic part of the show’s success.
“Ten knows Gogglebox is still one of its strongest entertainment brands,” says the insider.
“The challenge is reminding viewers why they fell in love with it in the first place. Bringing back fan favourites, like Yvie and Angie, would give fans exactly what they want.”
