Former member of The Wiggles Greg Page has finally discussed the reason why he left the children’s music group at the height of their fame.
Page, the Yellow Wiggle, left The Wiggles in 2006 amidst his mental health struggles which he has openly discussed over the years. He returned to the group briefly in 2012 and then again for a reunion concert in 2020. It was at the 2020 reunion that he suffered a cardiac arrest while performing.
In a recent interview with the Herald Sun, Page opened up about his mental health struggles and explained that he was going through some personal issues at the time.
“I probably, in a way, helped create my own lonely environment by not dealing with the issues that I had,” he said.
The 52-year-old father of six revealed that during his time as part of The Wiggles, he only had “superficial” relationships with his bandmates and was never able to open up to them about his fears of being judged.
Page suffered from intense feelings of isolation and disconnection during this time in his life, and despite the facade he may have put on when he was performing, offstage, he would “spend all his time alone in his room, crippled with loneliness.”
“I kept the feelings to myself. I think everybody kind of knew that there was stuff going on and let’s face it, most people have stuff going on in their life, but it’s how you deal with that and how you cope with it that can be the trigger for becoming lonely,” he told the publication.
Page went on to add that he never blamed his bandmates, but rather blamed himself for not having the confidence to build those deeper connections.
During The Wiggles’ 2006 US tour, Page was forced to withdraw from the group after suffering from slurred speech, fainting spells, and fatigue. He was later diagnosed with a non-life-threatening form of dysautonomia and decided to step away from his career as the Yellow Wiggle.
