Grant Denyer has opened up about his “tough” childhood, breaking down on air about his single mother Glynis.
The 41-year-old became emotional on his 2DayFM breakfast program on Monday as he recalled his family had “no money growing up.”
The Gold Logie winner was reduced to tears as he revealed the sacrifices his mother made for him and his siblings.
“I lived with my mum [growing up] and we did it pretty tough,” Grant explained.
“We’d look forward to a treat on Friday [a trip to McDonald’s] and we were always excited because this was our little thing right before the weekend,” he continued.
Grant recalled feeling “annoyed” during the routine Friday night meal as his mother would often pinch a few of his hot chips.
“It always used to annoy me when mum would order and she’d always end up pinching our chips…and you’d [say], ‘Mum, why? Why are you pinching my chips. If you want chips you should have bought yourself your own chips’.”
However, Grant’s mother recently revealed she could never afford her own.
Recalling the story, Denyer broke down in tears and confessed he felt “terrible” that he gave his mother such a “hard time” about something so minor.
“I feel terrible because I used to give her a hard time…a real hard time,” the host said.
“It was an easy sacrifice for her I know…I just feel bad that she did it that tough back then and we took it for granted.”
Grant shares two daughters with his wife Cheryl, Scout and Sailor.
