Prince Charles is poised to become King when his reigning mother Queen Elizabeth II passes away.

But while there’s little doubt the Prince of Wales will take on the role, it’s thought that Charles has some very unusual ideas about what kind of monarch he wants to be.

In an interview shortly before his 70th birthday last November, the Prince was asked if he plans to be a “meddling” ruler because of his well known interest in politics and environmental issues.

His answer came as quite a shock to the journalists present, including royal correspondent Rhiannon Mills.

Speaking to Sky News’ podcast Behind the Headline, Ms Mills revealed: “He came out and said, “I’m not that stupid. I realise that when, one day, I am sovereign, I will have to play a different role.”

In 2015, Prince Charles caused controversy when it was discovered he had written a series of letters to government ministers on a number of military and social issues over the years, Express.co.uk reports.

Critics of the Prince claim his letters amounted to “political lobbying”, an act the royal family is expressly forbidden from engaging in.

Ms Mills noted “one of the reasons his mother the Queen has been so successful as a monarch is she has always remained politically neutral”.

Other senior members of the royal family including Charles’ sons Prince William and Prince Harry, as well as Harry’s wife Meghan Markle, have all come under fire for voicing their opinions on political matters and current affairs.
