With less than 50 days to go until the Paris Olympics begins, one question remains on the lips of the Australian sporting world – who will be leading our team into the Opening Ceremony as the 2024 Olympics flag bearers?

It has been confirmed the honour of carrying the Aussie flag will once again be given to one male and one female athlete.

While there are several strong candidates, New Idea hears many athletes are throwing their support behind Jess Fox. Fighter Harry Garside has said he would be “honoured” to walk behind the champion canoeist, especially after her golden Tokyo 2020 campaign.

“I think she’s such a good role model for any athlete coming up in Australia,” Harry said. “I really hope she’s flag bearer this time.”

Sportsbet also currently has Jess as their number one pick, with odds of 1.45. In second place they have hockey player Eddie Ockenden (1.95) followed by swimmer Emma McKeon (5.00). Others say swimmer Ariarne Titmus or one of the Matildas would also be worthy choices.

However, one sticking point to Jess taking up the honour could be the fact she’s due to compete in her first heat the following day. With Jess’ eyes fixed on taking home gold again, sources say she may want to prioritise a good night’s sleep.

Some also believe basketballer Patty Mills deserves to get a do-over. Patty previously carried the flag into Tokyo alongside swimmer Cate Campbell, but former Boomer Andrew Gaze reckons the popular point guard was robbed of the true experience, as COVID restrictions meant he walked into an empty stadium.

“The experience in Tokyo … It’s an honour no matter what you’re doing, but walking around in an empty stadium is not the same,” Andrew said on Channel Nine’s Road to Paris podcast. “I think that he would be a worthy candidate to have the opportunity again.”

When will the Australian flag bearers be confirmed?

Olympic cyclist Anna Meares will be the one to announce the two flag bearers, as part of her duties as the Australian team’s Chef de Mission. However, the athletes won’t be revealed to the public until a few days before the July 26 ceremony, and it’s coming down to a photo finish.

A previous flag bearer herself at the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Olympics, Anna isn’t dropping any hints, but says, “I feel giddy about the moment that I will be able to have that conversation with those athletes, when that time comes – it’s a pretty special and privileged thing to be able to offer.”
