Their relationship has been a rollercoaster, to say the least. So what did it take for the couple to get here?

Before It All Began
Miley Cyrus is the daughter of country singer Billy Ray Cyrus, whom she starred alongside on her hit Disney show, Hannah Montana.
Liam Hemsworth was born on January 13, 1990, in Melbourne, Australia, where he spent much of his childhood until his family moved to the small island of Phillip Island. Here, Liam says he spent a lot of time surfing with his brothers, fellow actors Chris and Luke Hemsworth.
How They Met
Miley and Liam met at quite an interesting time in both of their careers. Miley had reached tween queendom for her role as Hannah Montana and was gearing up for a step up into a more mature role and image. Meanwhile, Liam had just begun following in his brothers’ footsteps and was relatively unknown in the film industry. When they were cast to play Ronnie and Will in the movie adaptation of Nicholas Sparks’ The Last Song, some thought it was an odd pairing.
However, sparks flew on-screen and on-set, and not only did they deliver a swoon-worthy performance, but they also swooned over each other as well, falling in love throughout the course of filming.
While the two were getting cozy, they were also focused on their individual career growth. Miley continued honing her mature image by releasing her Can’t Be Tamed album, while Liam joined the cast of The Hunger Games trilogy.

2008 to 2009: The Summer Romance That Started It All
When Miley and Liam were cast as the teens who have a whirlwind summer romance in Nicholas Sparks’ The Last Song, it came as a pleasant surprise to everyone that the two actors fell in love for real.
In November 2009, Miley said Liam was her “best friend”.
2010: The Red Carpet Debut and Rumoured Break Up #1
In 2010, the couple made their relationship status official by appearing on the red carpet of The Last Song hand in hand. The also attended several events where they posed for photos as a couple together.
In June, Miley revealed that a lot of her songs on her Can’t Be Tamed album are about Liam.
Sometime around August, there was a rumour circulating that the two had broken up due to their schedules, but come September, they were seen spending the day together. This on-again-off-again cycle happened once more from November to April of the following year.
2011: Career Highs
Miley and Liam spent the majority of 2010 to 2011 working on their individual careers. This was the time when Liam had begun filming the first film in The Hunger Games trilogy, which marked a big step in his career. For Miley, 2011 was about wrapping up Hannah Montana and going on a worldwide tour.
2012: The Engagement
Rumours about Liam Hemsworth and Miley Cyrus’ relationship reached epic proportions when Miley was spotted wearing what looked like an engagement ring at the Hunger Games premiere. Miley quickly denied the engagement on Twitter, but announced their engagement to People Magazine just months after.
Miley Cyrus’ engagement ring (not the one that was seen on her finger at the premiere) was a beautiful 3.5 carat diamond ring made by the renowned Neil Lane.
2013: The Break-Up
From late 2012 to September of 2013, there was a lot of speculation about the couple’s rocky relationship. Though they had been seen cuddling up in Costa Rica in January, fans noted how awkwardly stiff they looked together at the August premiere of Paranoia.
By September, social media went a little crazy when fans noticed that Miley had unfollowed Liam on Twitter. Several days later, it is announced that the engagement is off. At this point, fans of the couple are lamenting the death of true love as we know it. Their hearts break even more when Miley is purportedly seen breaking down in the middle of a Wrecking Ball performance.
The break up was kind of understandable though, considering how old the two were when they got engaged. Miley was only 20 and Liam was 22. They were barely out of their teens.
2014 – 2015: Miley Has Several Flings And Comes Out As Pansexual
Over the course of the next few years, Miley enters a phase of her life that many have dubbed her “wild years”. We like to say she was just living her best life. Miley was seen around town with a lot! the question on everybody’s lips was a perpetual; “who is Miley dating now?”
Along with the viral antics both on and off-stage and a completely new sound and look from the singer, Miley was seen dating a couple of celebrities around this time although she never really confirmed any rumours. She was spotted getting cozy with actor Patrick Schwarzenegger and model Stella Maxwell though.
In 2015, Miley revealed that she was pansexual and had actually come out to her mother when she was 14. Since then, Miley has been advocating for queer rights and causes.
Meanwhile, Liam adopts an adorable rescue pup.
2016: Back Together?
In January of 2016, rumours circulated that the two were getting back together after fans saw Miley and Liam together at a music festival.
Soon after, Miley was spotted wearing her old engagement ring and moving into Liam’s home. It seemed Miley Cyrus’ relationship with Liam Hemsworth was on the mend.
As of May 2016, Miley and Liam became officially engaged once more. Though a rep confirmed it in another magazine months earlier, it’s Liam’s GQ confessional that makes it official. Here, he doesn’t just talk about their engagement, he goes into the difficulty of those breakup years as well.
“But at the time we were going in different directions and it’s just what needed to happen”, says Liam. Then talking about the status of his relationship to Miley then, he said, “People will figure it out, they already have… They’re not dumb”.
2017: Malibu
Miley dedicated her new album, Malibu, to her fiance. It’s a homage to their happy years spent together in their Malibu home.
2018: Of Highs And Lows
Sadly, the Malibu home referenced in Miley’s new music was destroyed in the massive California wildfires of 2018. Though the couple were devastated, Miley did have some wonderful things to say about how Liam valiantly saved all of their pets during the tragedy.
Losing their home didn’t dampen the couple’s love. Miley Cyrus and Liam Hemsworth’s wedding took place in a low-key ceremony on Christmas Eve of that year in their Nashville home.
2019: Miley Hemsworth
Earlier this year, Liam revealed that Miley took his name. When Kelly Ripa interviewed him about marrying Miley Cyrus last year, Liam corrected her by saying, “[She’s] Miley Rae Hemsworth now, actually”.
Though rumours are once again circulating that the couple have been seen having public fights, Miley has also taken to social media lately to greet her hubby a happy 10th anniversary.
