While Harry and Meghan’s tour of Australia has been viewed as a PR coup, shocking tapes recently uncovered reveal the royal family hasn’t always been so successful at handling their public relations.
In 1987 members of the royal family – including Prince Edward, Princess Anne, Duchess Sarah and Prince Andrew – took part in a cringeworthy royal spin-off of the slapstick game show It’s A Knockout.
“There was not a single courtier who did not think it was a mistake,” Ben Pimlott revealed in his 1996 book The Queen.
Rather than making the royals more relatable, Pimlott states that the “excruciating” program “made the public stunningly aware that a sense of decorum was not an automatic quality in the royal family”.
