Meet the Matildas 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup squad

Marking the end of a two-and-a-half-year process, the Matildas squad for the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup has finally been announced!

Comprised of 23 members, the team will welcome back 15 players from the 2019 quadrennial tournament, while seven others will be making their Women’s World Cup debuts.

Participating in her fourth FIFA Women’s World Cup (FIFAWWC), Aussie household name Sam Kerr will lead the team as captain.

Defender Steph Catley will be supporting as vice-captain in her third appearance at the tournament.

Speaking at Australia’s FIFAWWC Squad Announcement, Matildas’ Head Coach Tony Gustavsson spoke to the immense excitement surrounding the 2023 World Cup squad.

“Selecting this World Cup squad has been the toughest challenge so far, but the whole coaching and support staff are all completely overjoyed for the 23 players who will represent the nation during this tournament,” he said.

“These 23 players not only exemplify what it means to be a part of the tradition of the CommBank Matildas, but also what it means to represent the 25 million Australians we know are fully behind us,” he continued.

“They have the heart, desire and the passion for the crest, and I can’t wait to see the next part of their story.”

Jumping into preparations, the team will kick off their World Cup journey on July 20 against the Republic of Ireland at Stadium Australia, Sydney.
