With literally zero renovation experience, surfing pros and House Rules contestants Mikaela, 24 and Eliza, 21 from WA admit they’re starting on the back foot.
“Honestly, we were both so clueless. We had honestly no experience whatsoever. I feel like we kind of just jumped off the deep end and thought, ‘Yeah, we’ll be able to do this,’ and didn’t even think much of it until push came to shove and we actually had to start designing things.” Eliza tells New Idea.
“I’ve never picked up a power tool in my life!” Eliza admits during the premiere episode.
“It’s like the blind leading the blind,” Mikaela adds.
“How hard can it be?” Eliza, asks with a laugh. “But we can do this.”
Their motivation is their beloved mum Kristen 55, a hardworking nurse. They’ll be renovating the family home she lives in to give her a fresh start after her divorce from their father.
“We are on this show for mum,” Eliza says. “And that’s what we will have in our hearts the whole time while we are renovating.”
“Mum has worked tirelessly our entire lives to give us everything we could possibly want and more. She’s sacrificed so much for our surfing and anytime we needed support or guidance she has been there,” adds Mikaela.
