Looking gaunt, fragile and wracked with pain, Sir Michael Caine has reportedly shed a shocking 13.5kgs – and a sensational report published in the US today claims he’s facing his final days.
The 84-year-old Alfie star, who’s been married to wife Shakira for 44 years, has admitted to fears that his body is at the end of its tether after decades of heavy boozing and cigarette smoking.
“I know my days are numbered and that’s the main worry,” says the man who once drank up to three bottles of vodka a day. “I’ll probably drop dead.”
Despite a late-life health overhaul, in which he’s quit smoking, cut back on drinking, and eliminated salt, sugar and gluten from his diet, Michael is still terrified of falling victim to cancer.
“I’m always looking up what’s the best thing against cancer, so I’ll eat that or do this or not do that,” he says.
Despite his fears, Michael’s still accepting film roles and is set to appear in three this year. “The film business will have to give me up, not the other way around,” he has said.
Friends are desperately worried about his latest weight loss though as New York internist Dr Stuart Fischer estimates the 6ft 2in actor is down to 165lbs [75kgs]. Dr Fischer – who has not treated Mr Caine – told the Globe: “This is not the time for weight loss. It sounds like an excuse for something more sinister. It could be the final curtain call.”
