Viewers furious after Masterchef Kristen Sheffield uses controversial phrase to describe challenge

'What year is it?'

Masterchef viewers have been left angered following the team relay challenge, as contestant Kristen Sheffield described the process of sharing recipe information as ‘Chinese Whispers.’

The chef said on Sunday night’s episode, ‘Our dish is going to be honeycomb, a honey tulle, and an ice-cream. The team relay is definitely a bit like Chinese whispers.’

She continued, ‘With four people cooking across different time frames, communication really is key.’

Some viewers were not impressed by the term ‘Chinese Whispers’.

One Twitter user wrote: ‘Are we still saying ‘Chinese whispers’ in 2018? #MasterChefAU’

‘Again with the “Chinese whispers”? What year is it #MasterChefAU’

One fan write: ‘Are we allowed to say Chinese whispers anymore? Or has it gone the way of golliwogs and f**s lollies #MasterChefAu.’

Channel Ten has not responded to the backlash.
