Six-year-old girl tragically dies in freak golf accident

Her father must be distraught.

A six-year-old girl has died in a freak accident after being hit in the head with a golf ball on Monday.

The child, from Orem in Utah, was staying at the Links at Sleepy Ridge golf resort with her father when he accidentally struck a shot into the base of her neck, the Associated Press reports.

Orem Police Department said the girl was airlifted to a hospital in Salt Lake City, the state capital, but died from her injuries on Monday night.

Reports indicate the child was sitting in her father’s golf buggy when the incident occurred.

Steven Marett, Head of Professional Golf at Sleepy Ridge, told KSL.com he had never seen a serious injury, let alone a fatal one, on the course before.

“This is absolutely unimaginable, and it’s been devastating to see it at the course and in the community,” Mr Marett said.

Orem Police Lieutenant Trent Colledge called the death an “extremely tragic accident”.

“I can’t imagine what the father is going through,” he told the Salt Lake Tribune.
