As it turns out, the Queen went one step further than the usual meet and greet and she once requested to meet a pop band in private, because she loved their music so much.

Back in the 1980s, the monarch was a massive fan of Wham! the band of George Michael and Andrew Ridgeley.

According to reports, she loved them so much, she knew all their hits and was desperate to meet the band.

The claims were made by the Wham!’s manager Bryan Morrison in his memoir, Have a Cigar!, which was published recently after his passing 11 years ago.

“Through an emissary, I learnt that the Queen had heard that I was managing and publishing Wham! and that she would like to meet them,” he wrote.

He claimed that the Queen wanted to meet the duo at a polo match in 1985 – which she did, much to her delight.

Bryan added: “To my amazement, on greeting them, the Queen knew all of their hits and spent a great deal of time listening to their exploits.”

It turns out the queen is quite the music fan, and has met a number of musicians, bands and pop stars during her reign.

In 1965 she met The Beatles, in 1997 it was the Spice Girls, and in 2002 it was Madonna’s turn to curtsey to the monarch.
