Ever wondered why ALDI checkout assistants sit on a chair while they’re working at the till and scanning your groceries? While many other supermarkets have their employees stand while they serve customers at checkouts, ALDI staff are given chairs to sit on while they work.
Well while you might think it’s all in the name of comfort for ALDI employees, it seems there’s a whole different reason behind the supermarket’s checkout chair policy.
Former and current employees reveal that bosses insist that their checkout staff sit while they’re working as studies showed them that employees can scan and work faster while they’re seated.
‘We had some bosses from Germany come out to our store and they said they did a lot of research and it showed that employees work faster and better when they’re sitting down,’ says Reddit user.Added another user, who says he’s an employee at the supermarket: ‘Aldi cashiers sit down because they did research and you scan faster when you are sitting. Not for the benefit of the the employee.. .TBH the chairs just get in the way and standing is better sometimes anyway.’And according to other Reddit users, their policy is working.Says one: ‘Aldi allows them to sit and those clerks are crazy fast.’ Added another: ‘Aldi has always been insane fast at check out.’Said a third: ‘All of their products have giant barcodes and multiple barcodes on different sides of the product. They also don’t have to bag anything. They don’t have to turn a product to get it to scan, they just throw things through.’
