Whether its a matter of rocking up to the cinema to watch the new releases, or gathering your family together on the lounge to relive an old favourite, the chances are you’ll be viewing a fair few films come December 2019. Plot: A severe blizzard engulfs the town where the Engels family have gathered to spend Christmas, cutting them off from food and resources. But they are not alone …

Why We Love It: The Krampus is an ancient demonic spirit who punishes those who have lost the Christmas spirit – an anti-Santa if you will!

Suitable For: Fans of both Christmas and horror, but best wait until the kids have gone to bed!

49. Bad Santa

Film: Bad Santa

Year: 2003

Plot: Every year Willie gets a job as a department store Santa and his friend Marcus gets a job as an elf. Together, they rob the department stores after hours and seem hell-bent on a life of crime and debauchery – until Willie meets a boy who really believes that he is Santa.

Starring: Billy Bob Thornton, Tony Cox, Bernie Mac

Why We Love It: It’s everything most Christmas films aren’t – crass, graphic, funny and a little bit gross.

48. Christmas With The Kranks

Film: Christmas With The Kranks

Year: 2004

Plot: Stricken with empty-nest syndrome, husband and wife Luther and Nora Krank decide to skip Christmas and go on a 10-day Caribbean cruise instead. The fall-out from this less than conventional decision is intense. The Kranks become pariahs in the community, until circumstances dictate that they must organise their usual Christmas party with only 12 hours to spare.

Film: Just Friends 

Year: 2005

Plot: Before he was Deadpool, Ryan Reynolds played Chris Brander, a high school outcast who reinvents himself after years of being ‘just friends’ with his teenage crush. When Chris returns to his hometown for the Christmas holidays, he gets another chance to win the girl of his dreams over.

Plot: When Jack Frost, father and lead singer of the band, is killed in a car accident, he comes back to life as snowman

Plot: Fred Clause is the lesser-known brother of Santa Clause and is estranged from his North Pole family. But when Fred needs money for bail, he has no choice but to get in contact with his world famous brother.

Why We Love It: Santa gives to the children of the world and Fred, who works as a repossession agent, takes! It’s a classic case of sibling rivalry.

44. Christmas in Connecticut 

Film: Christmas in Connecticut

Year: 1945

Plot: Elizabeth may be a famous food writer, much loved for her stories about her husband and family life in Connecticut, but she’s really a singe lady living in New York. When her boss asks her to host a Christmas dinner party, she’s forced to head to Connecticut to keep up the illusion.

Starring: Barbara Stanwyck, Dennis Morgan

Why We Love It: It’s still funny and entertaining after all these years. Christmas in Connecticut has real staying power.

43. Eyes Wide Shut 

Film: Eyes Wide Shut

Year: 1999

Plot: Tom Cruise and Nicole Kidman sizzle in this erotic psychological drama. Married couple Alice and Bill discuss  episodes of unfulfilled temptation, and when Alice admits she has fantasised about being unfaithful, a disturbed Bill leaves on a night-long adventure. 

Starring: Nicole Kidman and Tom Cruise

Why We Love It: Hear us out, this is a Christmas film! If you pay close attention, you’ll see that iconic director Stanley Kubrick placed Christmas trees in the background of multiple scenes.

Suitable For: Cinephiles, but certainly not suitable for children.

42. A Very Harold & Kumar Christmas

Film: A Very Harold & Kumar Christmas 

Year: 2011

Plot: Seven years have passed since Harold and Kumar escaped Guantanamo Bay, and these former best friends have gone their separate ways. Harold is a high-flying business man but Kumar is broke still lives in their old apartment. When some Christmas mail for Harold arrives at Kumar’s places by mistake, Kumar attempts to deliver it to its rightful owner.

Film: Four Holidays

Plot: In in effort to avoid having to spend time with both sets of divorced parents, couple Brad and Kate pretend to be called overseas for charity work so that they can go on vacation undetected. But when wild weather ruins their plans, they are left with no option but to have four holidays with each of their biological parents.

Starring: Reese Witherspoon, Vince Vaughan, Robert Duvall 

Why We Love It: When it comes to the logistical nightmare that is touching base with all your family members during the Christmas break, Four Holidays is far too real. 

Suitable For: Anyone who has disparate family.

39. Surviving Christmas 

Film: Surviving Christmas 

Year: 2004

Plot: Intent on spending Christmas in his former childhood home, wealthy advertising executive Drew pays the new family living there $250,000 to let him spend the holidays with them.

Starring: Ben Affleck, James Gandolfini and Catherine O’Hara

Why We Love It: Despite the unrealistic premise, Surviving Christmas is about the importance of family. 

Suitable For: Fans of lighthearted goof-ball comedy.

38. Christmas Evil 

Film: Christmas Evil 

Year: 1980

Plot: A disturbed man obsessed with Santa Claus goes on a murderous rampage dressed as The Fat Man himself. Enough said.

Starring: Brandon Maggart, Jeffrey DeMunn, Dianne Hull

Why We Love It: Cult director John Waters is a huge fan of Christmas Evil, recording  feature-length commentary for the movie’s Blu-ray re-release in 2014, so if it’s good enough for John Waters its good enough for us.

Suitable For: Lovers of the psychological slasher genre

37. You’ve Got Mail

Film: You’ve Got Mail 

Year: 1998

Plot: In this remake of ‘The Shop Around the Corner’ two business rivals are unaware that  they are caught up in an online relationship with the other. 

Starring: Tom Hanks, Meg Ryan

Why We Love It: This was the third time Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan were paired together for a film, and it’s a winning combination.

Suitable For: Anyone that remembers the joys of dial-up internet. 

36. Gremlins

Film: Gremlins 

Year: 1984

Plot: Don’t expose it to bright light. Don’t get it wet and never, ever feed it after midnight. When Billy Peltzer receives a Mogwai for Christmas, he gets a whole lot more than he ever bargained for.

Starring: Zach Galligan, Corey Feldman, Phoebe Cates

Why We Love It: Gremlins is the perfect combination of horror and comedy. We all want our own Mogwai, but we’ll pass on having a Gremlin.

Suitable For: anyone who loves retro 80s films.

Film: Black Christmas 

Year: 1974

Plot: Another slasher x Christmas collaboration, Black Christmas takes place in a snow covered village where a creepy attic-dweller has it out for a group of sorority sisters.

Why We Love It: Its a classic slasher movie set to a Yuletide backdrop – what’s not to love!

Suitable For: Fans of old school horror.

34. Metropolitan 

Film: Metropolitan 

Year: 1990

Plot: It’s Christmas with the yuppies in this satirical late 90’s Christmas romp.

Starring: Carolyn Farina, Allison Parisi, Will Kempe

Why We Love It: With dialogue like “It’s a tiny bit arrogant of people to go around worrying about those less fortunate” Metropolitan is just so darn quotable!

Suitable For: Fans of indie film.

Film: Rare Exports: A Christmas Tale 

Year: 2010

Plot: What would you do if Santa was real and buried in a mass grave in Finland? What if Santa was real and buried in a mass grave somewhere in Finland? Would you let it slide, or would you do what this young father and son team do, and investigate?

Starring: Onni Tommila, Jorma Tommila, Tommi Korpela

Why We Love It: This Finnish dark fantasy horror is a real change of pace

Suitable For: Anyone with a penchant for the whimsical and the strange

32. The Preacher’s Wife

Film: The Preacher’s Wife 

Year: 1996

Plot: Denzel is an Angel sent to Earth to help rekindle a marriage between Whitney Houston’s choir singer and her pastor husband.

Starring: Denzel Washington, Whitney Houston, Courtney B Love

Why We Love It: Denzel Washington isn’t known for his romantic comedy roles, so this departure from his usual genre is refreshing.

Suitable For: Whitney Houston fans who want to get into the Christmas spirit.

33. Tangerine

Film: Tangerine 

Year: 2015

Plot: On Christmas Eve, transgender sex worker Sin-Dee Rella discovers that her boyfriend has been cheating on her. Best friend and fellow transgender sex worker Alexandra is trying to get people to attend her musical performance, but will Sin-Dee Rella’s hunt for her boyfriend’s other woman derail everything? 

Starring: Kitana Kiki Rodriguez, James Ransone, Mya Taylor

Why We Love It: The film was shot on three iPhone 5s smartphones, and it explores the platonic relationship between two transgender women.

Suitable For: Any who is a fan of Tarantino movies, as this Sean Baker film is very much up that alley.

30. A Christmas Prince 

Film: A Christmas Prince 

Year: 2017

Plot: An aspiring journalist is sent to a foreign country to cover a press conference with crowned Prince Richard. A case of mistaken identity means she ends up as tutor to young Princess Emily. Is this just about getting the inside scoop, or is there romance on the cards?

Starring: Rose McIver, Ben Lamb, Tom Knight, Sarah Douglas, Daniel Fathers, Alice Krige and Tahirah Sharif.

Why We Love It: This Netflix film is so cheesy, but it’s impossible not to like.

Plot: An isolated Chicago subway worker rescues the man of her dreams from an oncoming train on Christmas Day. But what she doesn’t count on is falling in love with her dream man’s brother.

Why We Love It: While You Were Sleeping follows a formula, but it remains so charming

Suitable For: Families and those who long for 90’s nostalgia 

28. Almost Christmas

Film: Almost Christmas 

Year: 2016

Plot: Walter Meyers is a widower who lost his wife a year ago. He’s invited his four adult children and extended family to his house to celebrate Christmas, and he knows he’ll need a Christmas miracle if they are all going to get along!  

Starring: Kimberly Elise, Mo’Nique, Nicole Ari Parker, Gabrielle Union, Keri Hilson, Jessie Usher, Danny Glover, Omar Epps, John Michael Higgins, D.C. Young Fly, and Romany Malco.

Why We Love It: Everybody has a dysfunctional family, so it’s good to watch one on screen. 

Suitable For: Anyone whose family drives them crazy over Christmas. 

27. The Night Before

Film: The Night Before 

Year: 2015

Plot: In 2001, after Ethan’s parents are killed in a car accident, his friends Isaac and Chris pledge to spend every Christmas with him. By 2015, the tradition is becoming hard to uphold, but is Ethan ready to let go?

Starring: Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Seth Rogen, Anthony Mackie

Why We Love It: This is just what you’d expect from a Seth Rogen movie – illicit substances, multiple gags and characters who are struggling to embrace the responsibilities of adulthood.

Suitable For: Anyone who loves a stoner-comedy

26. Carol

Film: Carol

Year: 2015

Plot: Set in New York City during Christmas 1952, Carol tells the story of a forbidden affair between an aspiring female photographer and an older woman going through a difficult divorce.

Why We Love It: It’s progressive, it’s heartbreaking, it received 5 Golden Globe nominations, 6 Academy Award nominations and 9 BAFTA Award nominations.

Suitable For: Anyone that wants to see Rooney Mara wearing a Santa hat.

25. Bridget Jones’s Diary

Film: Bridget Jones’s Diary 

Year: 2012

Plot: From one Christmas to the next, we watch journalist Bridget Jones climb the career ladder and navigate life as a singleton, all the while keeping her eyes open for Mr. Right. Is it Dan Cleaver? Because surely it can’t be  the Christmas jumper clad Mark Darcy…

Starring: Renée Zellweger, Colin Firth, Hugh Grant

Why We Love It: Anyone that has ever lamented at the pitfalls of the dating scene is able to relate to the trials and tribulation of Bridget Jones.

Suitable For: Watching with someone that you love, exactly as they are.

24. About A Boy

Film: About A Boy

Plot: Based on the 1998 novel of the same name, About A Boy revolves around grumpy, shallow Will who is living off the proceeds of a Christmas song his father wrote. He unexpectedly comes to realise the importance of family Christmases through his serendipitous relationship with young boy Marcus

Why We Love It: It’s a romantic comedy, but it’s messy and complex just like real life.

Film: Planes, Trains & Automobiles 

Year: 1987

Plot: Due to adverse circumstances, two total strangers are forced to take an impromptu cross country road trip in order to make it home in time for the holidays. They hate each others guts – but they have no choice but to work together! 

Starring: Steve Martin, John Candy 

Why We Love It: Because it’s as if Steve Martin and John Candy aren’t playing characters, and are just playing themselves instead.

Suitable For: Lovers of Old School comedy

22. Robbie The Reindeer

Film: Robbie The Reindeer 

Year: 2001

Plot: Robbie, son of a certain famous reindeer, arrives in the North Pole hoping to work as a navigator for Santa. Blitzen, who envies Robbie’s red-nosed father, plots to have Robbie kicked off the sleigh team.

Starring:  Ardal O’Hanlon, Paul Whitehouse, Jane Horrocks, Steve Coogan, Harry Enfield, Alistair McGowan 

Why We Love It: This animated series is perfect for children, but it’s so full of higher level jokes and little subtleties that adult watching will love it as well.

21. Ernest Saves Christmas

Film: Ernest Saves Christmas

Year: 1988

Plot: Ernest is working a taxi driver when Santa Clause flags him down. Santa is 151 years old in the shade, and is en route to inform a local celebrity Joe Carruthers that he has been selected to become the next Santa Clause. When Santa leaves his sack in Ernest’s taxi, Ernest has no choice but to get involved.

Why We Love It: This xmas comedy film really is a laugh a minute, despite it being over 30 years old.

20. Jingle All The Way 

Film: Jingle All The Way

Year: 1996

Plot: If workaholic father Howard doesn’t get his hands on the best-selling Turboman doll for his son, Christmas is cancelled. 

Starring:  Arnold Schwarzenegger, Sinbad, and Phil Hartman

Why We Love It: Every year there’s a new toy that is all the rage, and every year parents will do anything to get their hands on one. While Jingle All The Way was not an instant smash hit, it definitely taps into the underlying dangers of consumerism.

Suitable For: Any parent who has ever frantically shopped for the latest fad.

19. Deck The Halls

Film: Deck The Halls

Year: 2006 

Plot: Christmas aficionado Steve is preparing for another perfect Christmas with his family, when new neighbours The Halls move in across the street. After looking at his new house on MyEarth, car salesmen Buddy Hall decides he wants to be able to see his house from space, and this ambition brings serious tension to the neighbourhood. 

Starring:  Danny DeVito, Mathew Broderick 

Why We Love It: Every knows one street in their hometown where neighbour’s compete to have the most lights up, so in that sense Deck The Halls is only too relatable. 

Suitable For: Family viewing.

18. How The Grinch Stole Christmas

Film: How The Grinch Stole Christmas 

Year: 2000

Plot: Based on the children’s picture book by Dr Seuss, The Grinch is determined to steal Christmas away from the festive residents of Whoville.

Starring:  Jim Carrey, Anthony Hopkins, Taylor Momsen

Why We Love It: Jim Carrey’s performance as The Grinch is iconic.

Suitable For: Fans of the tales of Dr Seuss, and anyone who loved The Cat in The Hat

17. The Holiday 

Film: The Holiday 

Year: 2006

Plot: LA-based Cameron Diaz and English rose Kate Winslet agree to swap houses for the holidays, in pre-Air BnB 2006. Both women are looking for a change of scene, but neither suspects that they’re about to find love.

Starring:  Kate Winslet, Jack Black, Cameron Diaz and Jude Law 

Why We Love It: You can’t make a list of Christmas movies without including The Holiday. This romantic comedy is funny, heartwarming, an all round crowd-pleaser.

Suitable For: Romantics

16. A Charlie Brown Christmas 

Film: A Charlie Brown Christmas 

Year: 1965

Plot: Charlie Brown turns away from the commercialism of the Christmas season and searches for its true meaning instead.

Starring: Peter Robbins, Tracy Stratford, Chris Shea

Why We Love It: Even though this isn’t a film, this Peanuts Christmas special will never go out of fashion. 

Suitable For: The young and old alike.

15. Miracle on 34th Street

Film: Miracle on 34th Street 

Year: 1994

Plot: Every child in New York believes that the Coles Department Store Santa is real – every child that is, except 6 year old Susan.

Starring: Richard Attenborough, Elizabeth Perkins, Dylan McDermott, Mara Wilson, Robert Prosky

Why We Love It: This 1994 remake is every bit as good as the 1947 original. 

Suitable For: Family Christmas viewing.

14. The Nightmare Before Christmas

Film: The Nightmare Before Christmas 

Year: 1993

Plot: Jack Skellington, the King of Halloween Town, inadvertently arrives in Christmas Town and decides that he and all his subjects will try their hand at celebrating this unfamiliar holiday. 

Starring: Catherine O’Hara, Chris Sarandon, Danny Elfman

Why We Love It: Who knew that Christmas and Halloween would work so well together?

Suitable For: Tim Burton fans and those who appreciate stop-motion animation.

13. The Polar Express

Film: The Polar Express 

Year: 2004

Plot: Based on the children’s book of the same name, The Polar Express is about a young boy who boards a mysterious train that is bound for the North Pole.  

Starring: Tom Hanks

Why We Love It: The Polar Express is one of those classic Christmas movies that reminds its viewers of the true meaning of the season.

Suitable For: Families and fans of 3D animation.

12. Ruldoph The Red Nosed Reindeer 

Film: Rudolph The Red Nosed Reindeer 

Year: 1964

Plot: Animated stop-motion at its very best, Rudolph The Red Nosed Reindeer may be a television special that’s over 50 years old, yet it hasn’t aged a day. 

Starring: Burl Ives, Larry Mann, Billie Richards

Why We Love It: How can you not love the story of Rudolph rises above the teasing of the other reindeer, and the scenes on the Island of Misfit Toys are still tear-jerkers.

11. Arthur Christmas

Film: Arthur Christmas 

Year: 2011

Plot: It’s Christmas every day for Arthur, son of Santa. But when Arthur’s Dad’s high tech sleigh malfunctions and one child us left without a gift, clumsy Arthur is forced to leave the North Pole to advert disaster. 

Starring: Jim Broadbent, Michael Palin, Bill Nighy, Laura Linney, Hugh Laurie, Imelda Staunton, Eva Longoria, James McAvoy, Ashley Jensen, Marc Wootton, Ramona Marquez.

Why We Love It: Watching Santa adopt a technological approach to world-wide present delivery makes for comedy gold.

Plot: After Father Christmas has an accident, father Tim Allen must take step up to the plate. But it turns out he’s signed up for a lot more than he bargained for as he starts to literally morph into Santa himself!

Why We Love It: The transformation that takes Tim from suburban Dad to Jolly Old Saint Nick is what makes this a must watch Christmas movie.

9. Scrooged

Film: Scrooged 

Year: 1998

Plot: Bill Murray places a cold-hearted, cynical television executive who is visited by three ghosts on Christmas Eve.

Why We Love It: Charles Dicken’s A Christmas Carol has been reimagined several times, but never quite like this version.

8. The Snowman

Plot: Raymond Briggs’s book comes to life as a young boy’s magically snowman becomes real for one glorious night. There is no dialogue, yet the animated film remains so powerful. 

Why We Love It: Nominated for an Oscar, the song “Walking In The Air” never fails to give us goosebumps.

Suitable For: Any who has ever wished that their Snowman could come to life.

7. Elf

Film: Elf 

Year: 2003

Plot: Santa inadvertently brings a baby boy back to the North Pole after visiting man orphanage and his elves take a shine to the human child. They name him Buddy and Papa Elf elects to raise him. It soon becomes abundantly clear to Buddy that he himself is not an elf and, after finding out his biological father is on Santa’s ‘Naughty List’, Buddy journeys to New York City to redeem him.

Why We Love It: Buddy the Elf’s boundless enthusiasm for the Christmas season is infectious

6. It’s A Wonderful Life

Film: It’s A Wonderful Life 

Year: 1946

Plot: James Stewart’s imminent suicide on Christmas Eve causes his guardian angel to spring into action, showing him how different the community of Before Falls would be if he had never existed.

Why We Love It: Frequently mentioned on classic Christmas movie lists, It’s A Wonderful Life is incredibly uplifting and gives every viewer a new found appreciation for their life and the people in it.

Why We Love It: This was the first Muppet film to be produced in the wake of creator Jim Henson passing away, and you can tell that director Brian Henson wanted it to be done right.

Suitable For: Everyone! There isn’t a single soul who could dislike this Christmas film, and if they say otherwise then they’re clearly lying.
