He began his career on the Nine Network children’s series The Saddle Club, before gaining wider recognition for his portrayal of troubled teenager Josh Barrett on Home and Away.
Most recently, Gallagher featured as AFL player Connor Marrello in the Network 10 drama Playing for Keeps.
In addition to his entertainment career, Gallagher has also worked as a photographer for the Australian Broadcasting Corporation.

Joshua “Josh” Barrett was a character on the long-running Australian television soap Home and Away.
Played by actor Jackson Gallagher, Josh Barrett featured on the series from August 2013 until July 2016.
He was introduced with his on-screen brother Andy Barrett (played by Tai Hara) through a series of online web-episodes called Home and Away Extras.
Josh’s character was a troubled but kind-hearted teen who had a tough upbringing in Summer Bay’s neighbouring suburb, Mangrove River.
According to his character profile, he was often blamed for wrongdoings that weren’t his and received little support from adults or teachers.
Writers hoped the angst ridden teenage Barrett would resonate with viewers, particularly anyone who felt they were misjudged, misunderstood or neglected.
Many of his storylines focusing on his relationships with Maddy Osborne (played by Kassandra Clementi) and Evelyn “Evie” MacGuire (played by Philippa Northeast) who he became engaged to in the programme.
Barrett’s explosive introduction on the show saw him attend Heath’s beach side wedding, where he kissed Maddy to the frustration of her love interest, Casey.
As a bitter Casey drove Maddy home from the party, Josh and brother Andy rammed their car off the road causing the vehicle to explode into flames which left Casey paralysed.
Barrett’s life in Summer Bay was constantly filled with trauma and danger.
The plot also saw him become involved with a bitter feud between his brother and the Braxton family, shot by his own mother, become entangled in drug dealing with brother Andy, held hostage and brutally assaulted by Tank Snelgrove (played by Reece Milne), an altercation which left him temporarily blind.
Moments from Barrett’s tumultuous, on-off relationship with Evie are probably his most memorable Home and Away scenes, with Daily Mail Australia entertainment reporters dubbing them “Summer Bay’s hottest young couple” on numerous occasions.
In May 2016, Josh Barrett was sensationally exposed as the killer of Charlotte King (played by Erika Heynatz), and dramatically fled Summer Bay with brother Andy before he was re-captured off-screen by police.
