Popular kids’ TV stars Emma Watkins and Lachlan Gillespie, AKA Emma Wiggle and The Purple Wiggle have divided parents after posting a controversial message to Instagram on Friday.
In the image shared to Emma’s account, Lachlan poses with a sign that reads “Boys can be Emma” while wearing a yellow bow in his hair.
She captioned the pic: “YES!!”
Emma is The Wiggles’ only female member. Therefore, Lachlan’s sign means it’s OK for boys to dress as girls if they want to.
While The Wiggles have been widely praised on social media for sharing a positive message for transgender youth, their post has divided parents’ opinions.
One person wrote: ‘What we wear doesn’t define who we are. Go Wiggles!’
“Srsly, my son would willingly ditch me for Emma any day of the week and wouldn’t look back,” wrote one mum.
“My son had a bow in his hair at aged 3. He loved being Emma!” shared another.
“I have a little boy that proudly wears his Emma headband everywhere!” wrote another.
But not all parents saw the post as positive.
“Can we not bring political agendas into our kids shows?” wrote one.
“Ummm … sorry no they can’t. It’s called biology,” stated another.
While others said: “What?! Farewell Wiggles, it’s been fun, but no. Boys can’t be Emma.”
And: “No don’t start this they are innocent and too little!”
