'Its all about positive body image'

As dance teachers, it’s no surprise House Rules resident married couple Pete and Courtney are focused on their fitness.

Having performed as dancers for most of their lives, the Victorian parents reveal they both put great stock in how they look.

“I danced not long after I started walking,” Courtney, 31, tells New Idea.

“As a dancer you are always in front of a mirror and it’s something you can’t escape. The dance industry is all about image and how you look after your body.”

Pete, 32, adds: “Well, your body is your instrument so it’s important to look after it.”

However, the pair say they’re conscious of encouraging a positive body image with their students.

“We have worked with young minds for so long,” Courtney says.

“We’ve never been about ‘you’re not the right image’. We are about healthy and strong and that it’s more about a mindset than skinny.”

Pete agrees with his wife, saying that dance doesn’t discriminate based on size.

“We’re never focused on body shape,” he reveals.

“We’re about healthy eating and about dance. For us, it’s a performance vehicle.

“We want dance-making to be about production and stories and it doesn’t matter what size you are.

“It’s about the execution of the movement so even in our teaching with impressionable kids and lots of girls, we are never focused on their size or weight.”
