Married At First Sight’s Cam Merchant has recently revealed the tragic life event that changed his life.
Speaking with 9Honey Celebrity, the former pro-cricketer detailed the moment he was separated from his parents, Russell and Margaret, when the Boxing Day Tsunami hit Thailand in 2004.
One of the worst national disasters in recent history, the Boxing Day tsunami killed over 225,000 people across 14 countries, and Cam feared the worst for his mum and dad when he couldn’t find them in their resort.

Cam shared with 9Honey Celebrity how he frantically searched for his parents around the island before being made to get on an evacuation bus.
“There were three mountains where all the hotel guests were on, and we passed the first and people got off, but I couldn’t see anyone.
“We go past the second mountain, people got off, couldn’t see anyone that I knew. We were almost at the third one and the driver was like, ‘Mate. I’m sorry but even if you can’t see anyone you have to get off here because you can’t come back down.'”
Cam continues to tell the publication that for a brief moment he thought he had lost his family, before a miracle happened: “And we got up to the top [of the third mountain] and I saw my dad and I said, ‘Hey, mate.’ And he just yelled, ‘Cameron’s here, dear, Cameron’s here!’
“Mum bolted around the corner and she was in tears. And I got off the bus, and we sort of hugged and kissed and everyone around just applauded. They just stood and applauded, because I can only imagine that Mum was a mess, and I just wrapped my arms around her.”

“It was certainly a special moment and one that definitely changed our lives forever.”
