On February 6, young American woman Kaylee Muthart was left completely blind after she clawed her eyes out while she was high on crystal meth and experiencing intense hallucinations.
The 20-year-old was seen fighting off locals outside a church in South Carolina in a state of delirium as they attempted to escort her to the nearest hospital.
A team of police were called in to calm her down and she was later flown to Grenville Memorial Hospital’s trauma unit where doctors desperately attempted to salvage her sight, but unfortunately Kaylee had done irreparable damage to her eyes.
A month later after an extended stay in hospital and later in the psychiatric unit, Kaylee finally returned home on March 1.
She recently spoke candidly about why she inflicted such horrific injuries onto herself admitting she thought she had to make a sacrifice to God and save the world by pulling her eyes out.
‘It made the world darker and took everything I believed in and distorted them to make me go down the path to pulling out my eyes. I proceeded to pull out my eyes with my bare hands and twisted them, and pulled them, and popped them,’ Muthart told PEOPLE of her meth induced state.
But despite such tragedy and now having to live a life without sight, Muthart insists her life is ‘’more beautiful than before”.
‘Life’s more beautiful now, life’s more beautiful than it was being on drugs. It is a horrible world to live in. I’d rather be blind and be myself than be Kaylee on drugs, and I truly mean that with my heart,’ she admitted.
Kaylee says she first became addicted to meth after a co-worker pressured her into trying it and despite stopping using it, after a short spell she was back on the drug.
Today, Muthart is thankfully clean but having to adjust to living life as a blind woman.
“I’ll forget I’m blind sometimes because I know what’s around me. Not down to a tee, but I know what my mom’s house looks like. You still see, but you don’t see with your eyes, it’s hard to explain because I don’t even understand it myself.
In the meantime, Muthart’s new life is busying herself as a public speaker for the Commission for The Blind and sharing her story and the dangers of using drugs.
So far over $25,000 has been raised to help Kaylee resurrect her life.
