As teams catch their breath and congratulate each other, Mat starts to feel ill and becomes short of breath and nauseas.
Shayn: “Matty has absolutely cooked himself” / “Everyone obviously pushes themselves to the extreme every week and I think after the feedback of last week the boys did not want to stop at all and I think Matty has burnt himself out”
The onsite medics call an ambulance and Mat is taken to the hospital.
Tim: “It was a tough day, that heat and everything just catches up with you and I think it did with Matty this afternoon”
Tim: “We put everything in there this week and I couldn’t be more proud of him. He’s a tough cookie and seeing him lay there like that, I know he’s really given it everything”
Tim: “That won’t be the end of Matty, don’t worry. He’ll be back, he’s a tough cookie”
“Basically, I just sort of collapsed at the end there,” Mat says.
“It got a bit full on and it was a really hot week, especially that day. It might have been 32 or 33 degrees that day. And there was a big dust storm that came through as well.
“We pushed and pushed and pushed and probably let my health get away from me a little bit and you know, I skipped lunch and didn't stay hydrated.”
So, what happened after the Melbourne chippie was taken away to hospital?
“It was all ok,” Mat says.
“We were just so focused on just trying to get to the finish line, I didn't realize I was as bad as I was until I stopped.
“My body was just sort of running on fumes.”
