He hung up his boots in 1995 and moved into coaching, first with Collingwood before landing the senior coaching position at Richmond.
A true footy fan, he also held prominent media roles over the years with Fox Footy, Triple M and SEN.
"We are incredibly saddened by Danny’s death," St Kilda president Andrew Bassat told 7News.
"Our thoughts are with Anita, and daughters Chelsea, Keeley and Danielle, and we will do whatever we can to support them in the days, weeks and months ahead.
"He was a larger-than-life character, a generous and warm personality, and a favourite son who has left an indelible mark on St Kilda."
A number of people took to 7News' reports to send their condolences to his family.
"So sad, you were a legend," one said.
"So sorry for his daughters and his wife, so sad," one wrote.
Another added: "Condolences to family and friends. RIP Spud, you are a true legend at the Saints, AFL and in life."
