If you’re bloated or your digestion is a bit off-kilter, it could be your everyday choices that are causing you grief. Try these simple bloat-beating swaps and feel the big difference a small change can make to your digestive comfort.

Breakfast Blowout…

Swap this:

Breakfast sets you up for the rest of your day, so make sure you’re making the most of yours. Heavy breakfasts like fried bacon and eggs or buttery croissants with jam are great for an occasional treat but can leave you feeling bloated, so they’re not a great choice for every day.

For this:

Get the best out of your brekkie by topping unsweetened natural muesli with a tub of Activia probiotic fruit yoghurt to kick-start your day with fibre and probiotics all in one yummy bowl of goodness. Activia is the only probiotic yoghurt proven to help improve your digestive comfort**. It contains exclusive probiotic Bifidus ActiRegularis®, live bacteria which survive through the stomach and reach the intestines alive.

...

Morning Munchies…

Swap this:

Sure, they look shiny and delicious, but to beat the bloat (and subsequent remorse) there are better choices than a kilojoule-loaded pastry or muffin.

For this:

Grab a banana – they’re portable, satisfying, easily digested and give you a nutrient-packed natural energy boost. Plus, just one medium banana has 2.4g of fibre, which is almost 10 per cent of your daily fibre needs*.

Stretch Your Legs

Swap this:

Do you eat lunch al-desko? You’re more likely to overeat when you’re distracted by your computer or phone screen, and that can wreak havoc with your digestion.

For this:

Even if you don’t go far, take a stroll, get some fresh air and eat your lunch away from your desk. Just the act of getting up and moving about can stimulate your gut so it can digest and eliminate waste while reducing discomfort or bloating.

The 3pm Slump

Swap this:

Back away from the vending machine! If you’re feeling sluggish, sitting at your desk while munching on a bar of chocolate will only give you a short-term sugar high with no nutritional benefits, and could actually make digestive discomfort worse.

For this:

Get up and stretch to wake up your body. Have a healthy snack, like a handful of almonds or a tub of yohgurt. Activia probiotic yoghurt is a great choice because it’s nutritionally balanced, with less added sugar than the average fruit yoghurt, no artificial colours or preservatives and made with 100 per cent Australian fresh milk.

Go the H20!

Swap this:

If you’re partial to soft drinks or beer with meals, you could be filling up on air rather than a nutritious meal. Carbonated drinks and alcohol are not only common culprits for bloating, but they’re high in kilojoules, sugar and sodium too.

For this:

Make water your first choice with meals, as it helps your food pass easily into the stomach and aids digestion, together with eating slowly and chewing your food well. Try herbal teas like peppermint, ginger and camomile blends, known for aiding digestion and soothing stomach discomfort.

Get Steamy With Your Veggies

Swap this:

You’re eating plenty of fruit and veggies, so why are you still feeling bloated? Fact is, if you’re chowing down on loads of raw veggies like broccoli, cabbage, kale, and collard greens, they could actually be causing wind and bloat.

For this:

Try steaming your vegetables for a few minutes, instead of eating them raw. (Any longer can destroy the nutrients.) The steaming process softens the woody fibres in veggies such as cauliflower and broccoli, so they are easier to digest and cause less disruption to your digestion. Try to eat small portions at first to help your digestive tract adjust to digesting them and you should notice an improvement in your tummy.
