Osher Günsberg: Everything You Ever Wanted to Know About the Former Andrew G

1. Who is Osher Günsberg and why is he famous?

Osher Günsberg is an Australian radio and television presenter, who became famous for co-hosting Australian Idol with James Mathison, before going solo as the host of The Bachelor Australia and its spin offs, The Bachelorette and Bachelor in Paradise. He also narrates the world-famous show Bondi Rescue and has even hosted a US talent show, Live to Dance.

Osher has worked for decades on radio, presenting shows on stations from Adelaide to Brisbane to Australia-wide networked shows, such as Take 40 Australia and The Hot Hits Live from LA.

The busy boy is also a writer, photographer, and has a well-respected podcast. Keep up to date with all Osher is up to on his Instagram , Facebook and Twitter.

2.  Is Osher Günsberg Andrew G?

Yes, he is, but it wasn't his first name change. At the beginnings of his radio career, he was nicknamed "Spidey."

Then, in 2009, The Bachelor host, who used to go by the name Andrew G - 'G' short for his surname Günsberg, which was thought by some to be too awkward a name for a showbiz career - decided to change his first name from Andrew to Osher (a Hebrew word for happiness).

In a Facebook post explaining why, he says, “I met with a revered Shaman in Tel Aviv. He told me about the power of a name, and how what we call ourselves affects our lives”. Although at first he kept the name change private, at age 38, after the end of his first marriage and Australian Idol, he decided he needed to reboot his life and went public with the name change.

This week in Paradise was made all the more awesome when my stunning Fijian wife @audreygriffen managed to stop by for some Hammocktime. Are you watching tonight? Emotional Rose Ceremony. Excellent blue suit. #bachelorinparadiseau

5. Is Osher Günsberg gay?

Osher is currently married to make-up artist Audrey Griffen. However it was revealed on Hit105’s Stav, Abbey and Osher breakfast show that she thought he was gay at first. He also spilled on the program that he’s ‘pashed a few blokes but, you know, it’s not for me.’

The wedding photos are starting to come through and I'm reminded of what a fantastic few days with family and friends we had. Thank you to all who shared it with us, we're still feeling the love from you all.

6. Is Osher Günsberg married? Who is Osher Günsberg's wife?

Yes, Osher is married. He wed Audrey Griffen in 2016 in a three-day celebration in the NSW countryside. The couple met on the set of The Bachelor in 2014 when Audrey got a job on the show. The pair met after Osher “had been chatting to a make-up artist I'd worked with for years about my love-life, and I was complaining about how hard it was to meet someone … She told me she was going off to another job but had a replacement to do my make-up, and said, 'She is lovely, she has a kid, and you're welcome.'” The rest is history, with the pair thinking it's funny "that we are the only successful couple from the Blake [Garvey] season [of the show]," Audrey says.

7. Is Osher Günsberg a dad?

Yes. Audrey and Osher, who already have Georgia, Audrey's 15-year-old daughter from a previous relationship, are now also expecting a baby together. Of being a step-dad, Osher says, 'I think what I didn’t really expect ... is how much things changed from one day to the next. One day, Georgia was my girlfriend’s kid that I hung out with and played Dance Dance Extreme with on the Wii. And then the next day I felt like: “I would do anything to save this person’s life! Even if it meant pushing her out of the way of a train and I’d get killed, I would do it.” '

8. Has Osher Günsberg been divorced?

Osher and Israeli actress, producer and singer Noa Tishby tied the knot in 2008 but called off their marriage in late 2011. "We started getting into patterns of fights that were completely irrational," the Dig actress explained the separation to New Idea. "I didn’t know what was going on, so instead of knowing how to handle it, I would get into the loop of the fighting and arguing, and it’s 100 per cent addictive."

He is the narrator of Bondi Rescue, a show seen in over 100 countries worldwide. He has popped up on TV drama Offspring, as well as Chris & Julia's Sunday Night Takeaway, The Project, Have You Been Paying Attention, Hughesy, We Have a Problem, and many more cameos.

In 2011, he was the host of US TV show Live to Dance, and before he became famous on Idol, he and James Mathison worked together on Channel [V] (Check out Osher with really, really long hair!).

On June 30, 2019, Osher was announced as the host of the new Channel 10 show, The Masked Singer, saying, “I’m so excited to be a part of a big, loud entertainment show for Network 10. The Masked Singer Australia is such an out-there show, such a wild format, and I can’t wait for people to see it. While lately, I’ve been whispering very seriously about roses, this is a very different side of what I do, and I’m thrilled that we’re doing it.”

New Podcast episode live now with Ian Dickson. ⁣⠀ Link in my bio. ⁣⠀ ⁣⠀ We talked about Australian Idol, life after TV and indeed life after "Dicko". ⁣⠀ ⁣⠀ Dicko, as you'd know him, was a brilliantly powerful record company executive who worked hand in glove with Simon Cowell as they created and broke Westlife across the planet, as well as so many other bands that were household names. ⁣⠀ ⁣⠀ He came out to Australia to work with BMG records and a few years later came to public prominence as the 'nasty' judge on Australian Idol. ⁣⠀ A massive media career followed, TV shows, radio shows, you name it, he did it. ⁣⠀ But as you'll hear in our chat - the Dicko as we knew him no longer exists. ⁣⠀ He's a different man. A man who's left behind what he once was and once wanted, and is now rediscovering his passion for music from an entirely different place. ⁣⠀ He's putting on a massive festival which we go into great detail about - the gig is happening August 10th on the Gold Coast - get your tickets at https://www.almostthegreatestgigonearth.com⁣⠀ You thought you knew Dicko. ⁣⠀ You thought you knew what drove him. ⁣⠀ Prepare to know something new. ⁣⠀ Enjoy this conversation with Ian Dicko Dickson. ⁣⠀

11. Does Osher Günsberg have a podcast?

Yes, it is called The Osher Günsberg Podcast which is “A weekly conversation that hopes to help you make today a little better than yesterday.” The show is well liked with a 4.8-star rating and has over 300 episodes, which cover interesting topics such as ‘The reality of vaccines’, ‘The question of Australia Day’, ‘Facebook is hacking your brain’ and others where he sits down with experts in each field. You can find it on both Apple Podcasts and Spotify.

12. Does Osher Günsberg have a blog?

Back in the day as Andrew G, Osher had a blog. So Naughties.

Because I'm a sober, vegan, coeliac (aka the most boring man on earth), I cooked for myself in my hotel room nearly every meal while we were in Fiji. ⁣ ⁣ I threw a pressure cooker and some dry supplies into the shipping container we took over there with all the lighting gear, and then would stock up on veggies from the Paradise kitchen and local roadside stalls.⁣ ⁣ This is a glorious leafy Fijian green called bele. ⁣ ⁣ With salt, chili and garlic - it's damned near one of the yummiest veggies I've ever eaten. ⁣ ⁣ Even in a pressure cooker. ⁣ ⁣ See you tonight 7:30pm⁣ #bachelorinparadiseau⁣ x⁣ ⁣

13. Is Osher Günsberg vegan?

Well, technically yes, but he doesn't call himself one, preferring to say he "eats plants." Back in 2016, while defending himself to animal activists for attending a horse race, Günsberg hit back against his critics on his radio show, saying, “I don’t eat animals. I say that I’m vegan because it’s the quickest way to get the explanation across but the truth is I’ve never really called myself vegan.”

He went on to say, “I like animals as much as the next person but I like people better and for me, factory farming is not very good at all for our environment and the food and water that’s fed to that livestock could be much better used for people.”

I always said I'd never take my shirt off on camera unless it was for the cover of @menshealthau.⠀ ⠀ I'm a man of my word.⠀ ⠀ This is me, with my shirt off on the cover of @menshealthau, and I'm the first plant-based person to do so in Australia. ⠀ ⠀ The full story is in the issue on sale August 6th. ⠀ Over ten weeks I lost 9kg of fat and gained 2.5kg of muscle by eating nothing but plants and training every day until I was a flat pancake on the gym floor. ⠀ ⠀ I started this #MHtransformation as a way to help me manage life off of meds. ⠀ I hadn't been on antipsychotics for about 18 months before I started this. I'd shifted to a different medication for the OCD, however as I got better and better, the side effects now became more prominent than the symptoms - so me and my Dr decided to try life without them. Coming off meds in Dec meant that I needed to put management strategies in the place where they once were, I needed things to help me regulate my emotions and emotional responses - and resistance training was a large part of that. ⠀ ⠀ I was grateful to train every day with @chiefbrabon and @emiliebrabonhames. ⠀ ⠀ I pushed my body until it released those feel-good hormones: the 4 horsemen of endorphins, dopamine, serotonin and norepinephrine. ⠀ ⠀ Like a good mental health patient, I kept checking in with my psychiatrist - and as the months passed, our med-free experiment carried on.⠀ ⠀ It's now 7 months off meds, and I'm still under Dr's supervision because there's a difference between not taking meds and not NEEDING to take meds. ⠀ ⠀ To keep it that way, resistance training is something I do almost every single day. I ride my bike almost every single day. I eat with purpose and consideration every single day. ⠀ ⠀ Sure it takes time, but that's an investment in my health but more importantly in the quality of my relationships at home and at work. ⠀ ⠀ The mental health benefits are incredible, the physical health benefits are off the chart (Dr can't believe my blood pressure for a 44yo) and let's be honest, the aesthetic benefits aren't bad either😉. ⠀ ⠀ This is a life goal, a dream come true, couldn't have done it without @audreygriffen by my side xx

14. How much weight has Osher Günsberg lost?

In 2018, Osher had an amazing body transformation after completing a 10-week Men’s Health regime, resulting in his weight dropping from 83kg to 76kg, shedding 9kg of body fat and gaining 2.5kg of muscle - plus a healthier outlook on life. He attributes the need to build a healthier body as part of his strategy to also build a healthier mind, with diet and exercise playing such an important role in mental health. "What I’ve found these last few months is that my response to triggers has just been dulled so much. I’ve found a way to take the edge off the world again through exercise," Osher said. He has also spoken about how he has struggled with his weight since childhood.

Back in 2016, the Daily Mail published an article, partly titled “Osher Gunsberg shows off his ‘Bali Belly’," which included intrusive images of the then tubbier presenter, shirtless and changing into a wetsuit, while on a private holiday in a remote location. Osher stood up for himself  and called the article bullying, writing a complaint to the Australian Press Council. As he says, "Body dysmorphia and the desire to be 'fit and ripped', powerful and handsome, like their male idols and celebrity worshipped heroes, leads many men down a garden path to feelings of worthlessness and self-hatred."

15. How many hairstyles has Osher had?

LOADS!!!! Here we present some of our favourites.

#fbf Thanks @jkpictured for unearthing this poster from Girlfriend magazine back in 2003(?). Between that pure polyester shirt and the amount of hair product going on - I was a walking fire hazard. Also, I appear to be doing a rap squat - so I'm either 20yrs too late or 15yrs too early.

Flashback to 2005 when Zammit and I performed at a farewell for @ladycakesb as she headed off to London to dominate television there. I am pulling shapes on a beautiful Maton Stockman (that I cant remember who I loaned to...?) because I think I am playing the very fiddly bits from the end of "More Than Words". That night our band name was "Hole Hearted: The Extreme Australian Extreme Experience" While I won't be blonde, or be playing this now lost guitar, I am playing some shows in the next few days. It's the stories and songs version of my book "Back, After The Break:LIVE" Canberra Sunday 14th, Wollongong & Gold Coast 19th & 20th. Books and Merch on sale and all shows meet & greet. Tickets in my bio. Hope to see you there, without this fringe. (I really miss that guitar though)

#tbt to @splendourinthegrass 2001, with @gt_dj for Channel [V]. ⠀ ⠀ We were but (natural) blonde haired children, nothing but cheekbones, cheek and a twinkle in the eye. ⠀ ⠀ This was a pretty excellent interview for me, as I'd interviewed @gt_dj some years before in Brisbane and we had clicked over a love of turntablism (he didn't get that nickname for nothing). ⠀ ⠀ To be able to interview him again, this time where both of our careers had taken an upswing was pretty exciting, and I was very proud to be where I was as he'd met me on the way up. ⠀ ⠀ A few things date this photo brilliantly:⠀ ⠀ 1: It's in 4:3⠀ 2: The microphones aren't wireless⠀ 3: Blonde streaks were fully fashionable⠀ ⠀ Simon (GT) and I stayed in touch and hung in LA when he lived there quite a bit. He's a good human. ⠀ ⠀ One thing I learned from working so long at the coal face of the music industry - you never saw the assholes twice. There's a reason GT is still a vital, valuable member of the Music Industry - because he's a fucking great human being. ⠀ ⠀ Big thanks to Gabe from SITG who shot this my way after unearthing a steam-powered Hard Drive that had the old footage on it. ⠀ ⠀ ⠀ #throwbackthursday #sitg #frostedtips #cheeky #backstage #throwback

Backstage at @takeawayAU, which is shot on Sound Stage 5 at Fox Studios Australia. We did four (or five I can't remember) seasons of Australian Idol on that stage. This was my old dressing room - room 509. James had room 506. For all those years, our wonderful floor manager Kyle (may he rest in peace) never called us by our actual names, he would only shout across the studio floor "O-Six! You're at the top of the stairs throwing to O-Nine backstage". Another name I've been known by to add to the list.
