WATCH: New mum furious after her niece 'stole' her baby's name

Unleashes fury on mums forum - by Holly Richards
  • 07 Nov 2018

A British woman has taken to an online forum to vent her frustration at her niece 'stealing' her child's name.

The new mum, who goes by the name 'GreyEyed' wrote the comment on parenting forum Mumsnet and was a big topic of conversation on Seven's Sunrise this morning (see video above).

Sunrise on Twitter

'My daughter was born 4 weeks ago (still in hospital) as she arrived premature,' she wrote.

'Niece gave birth yesterday morning and named her the same name (although I'm putting a long version on the BC). I'm a bit hurt tbh. AIBU [am I being unreasonable]?'

The woman's post was met with both outrage and understanding from other users of the forum.

'This would absolutely irritate me,' one user responded.

The new mum posted on Mumsnet

'Yes of course no owns a name blah blah but seriously where's the originality in using a very new baby's name who you will see frequently.'

But not everyone were on the new mum's side: 'I think people overreact to 'same' names, tbh. Imagine it was you who had picked out a name for your baby months ago, kept it quiet and then 'bam', a family member or friend has a baby a new days or weeks before you and use 'your' name!

'They didn't know you'd planned to use the same name; you didn't know they'd planned to use the name. Are you really going to tell me you would happily shrug and hit the baby name lists again? Or would you go with the name you had picked out, thought about, practiced saying in your head...? Let it go.'
