Jennifer Kiss-Engele was so upset when her son Sawyer was the only child in his class not to be invited to a party that she penned an open letter.
‘I know it’s not because he’s mean, you couldn’t meet a happier child,’ she wrote.
‘I know it’s not because he’s not fun, he has a great sense of humour and an infectious laugh.’
She continued: ‘The only reason why you decided it was OK to not invite my son to your child’s birthday party is because he has Down Syndrome.’
Jennifer goes on to explain that she isn’t angry at the other parent but wanted to educate them on what it means to have Down Syndrome and how she’d like for people to get to know her son better. She also doesn’t expect her son to be invited to every party but on this occasion all the other 22 children in his class were invited.
‘I realise that it’s my obligation as his parent and advocate to educate people more about what it means to have Down Syndrome and how they are more like you than different.'
