What is a monobrow?
A Monobrow and a Unibrow are the same thing. The Oxford Dictionary defines it as a pair of eyebrows that meet above the nose, giving the appearance of a single eyebrow. 'Mono' (derived from the Greek) and 'Uni' (from the Latin) both mean 'one'.
Now apparently not everyone feels as anti-Monobrow as each other.
Several models, artists, personalities and cult heroes have well and truly gotten away with the look, and not only that, been remembered for it.
The adoration of caterpillars around the world, here are the men, women and babies of the Unibrow universe...
Celebrities and famous people who rock the monobrow
Frida Kahlo
Celebrated Mexican painter is not only known for her vivid self-portraits but her distinctive hairy eyebrows, or more specifically, hairy eyebrow.
Sophia Hadjipanteli
The most famous Monobrow model of the moment. Sophia's agent encouraged her to grow her eyebrows for a more distinctive look. Well, she got that alright. Sophia's brows were the talk of the modelling and fashion world, and although it has worked for her, there haven't been hoards of models emulating her look. Eyebrow fashions have changed enormously over the years, but the Monobrow... Still, she has had a great response to her Insta hashtag #UnibrowMovement
Anthony Davis
Ahhh... the Anthony Davis Unibrow. Possibly the most prominent male Unibrow of the times. Pro Basketballer Davis, has rocked this look since puberty and has no plans to get rid of it.
"It just makes me different," he told ESPN.
Scarlett Costello
This model, who sites Frida Kahlo as her personal heroine, believes beauty lies in going with what mother nature provided.
North West (Monobrow baby?)
Kim Kardashian was blasted for supposedly removing her baby daughter's Monobrow. Kim, of course, laughed this off as absurd!
Monobrow girl? Who cares, she is divine.
Lourdes Leon
Like her mother before her, Lourdes proudly flaunts her body hair.
While the Monobrow of her youth has been tamed, she was snapped at the 2018 CFDA/Vogue Fashion Awards, showing the world her hairy pits and legs.
George Bush
Bush by name, bushy eyebrows by nature.
Bert from Sesame Street
The puppet with the big eyebrows - truly one of the most loved 'Monobrowers' of all.
Bill Berry
REM's drummer rocks more than music with these epic brows.
If you are blessed, or cursed, with a healthy single brow, which way will you swing? Keep it or get rid of it? If you decide to have two eyebrows instead of one, you can find out how to get rid of a Unibrow via some tried and tested methods...
How to get rid of a Monobrow / Unibrow
- Waxing: Lasts up to 4 weeks.
- Threading: Lasts up to 4 weeks. Long pieces of cotton thread are twisted to remove hair (essentially like plucking a lot at once).
- Plucking: A good alternative for the rogue stray hair or five.
- Laser hair removal (IPL): A semi-permanent to a permanent solution. Repeat treatments required (6 or less).
- Electrolysis: The perfect solution for permanent hair removal and ideally suited to a small area such as the Monobrow.
- Shaving: Actually, don't do this. Hair will grow back within a few days and the width of the razor makes it hard to be precise.
What to do if you have a monobrow
Emilie from the Little Wax Room in Hawksburn, is Melbourne's go to eyebrow queen.
In fact, for those in the know, she is simply 'Emilie Eyebrows'. Emilie remembers one client many years ago who had a very unusual Monobrow request.
This client, an incredibly beautiful Flight Attendant working with a Middle Eastern airline, was ordered by her boss to remove her Monobrow.
Instead of removing it, she asked Emilie to simply trim it. This woman hated her boss.
While she never got confirmation, Emilie believes this woman was 'stickin' it to the man' by complying - yet keeping it real.
What does the future hold for the Monobrow?
In evolutionary terms, climate change will lead to 37.6% increase Monobrows by 2042.
Since the functional purpose of eyebrows is to keep sweat from pouring into our eyes during hot yoga, it follows that as our planet heats up, our eyebrows will adapt.
On a serious note, we all know that true beauty is on the inside but it is no crime to give the outside a little help as well.
