The family of the late Heath Ledger have opened up about Michelle Williams’ shock marriage announcement.
Speaking to the Sun-Herald Heath’s father Kim Ledger, who has remained close with Michelle and their granddaughter, Matilda, 12, expressed his delight at the actresses revelation earlier this week that she had wed musician Phil Elverum.
"We are terribly happy, it is great," he said.
"She's very private and I don't really like to make too many comments about her, but we are very happy [for her]," he continued.
In her latest interview for Vanity Fair magazine, the 37-year-old let slip she walked down the aisle in a secret ceremony in the Adirondacks where she was joined by close friends and family, including her 12-year-old daughter, Matilda.
'Obviously I’ve never once in my life talked about a relationship,' she said. 'But Phil isn’t anyone else. And that’s worth something. Ultimately the way he loves me is the way I want to live my life on the whole. I work to be free inside of the moment. I parent to let Matilda feel free to be herself, and I am finally loved by someone who makes me feel free.'
Michelle and Matilda live in Brooklyn with Phil and his three-year-old daughter, who he had from his first marriage to the late Geneviève Castrée.
In the interview, the my week With Marilyn star says she never gave up on her search for love following the tragic passing of her ex, Heath Ledger, in 2008.
'I never gave up on love. I always say to Matilda, "Your dad loved me before anybody thought I was talented, or pretty, or had nice clothes,"', she shared.
Michelle met Heath on the set of Brokeback Mountain in 2005 and the pair welcomed Matilda later that year.
They split in August 2007 and Heath died of an accidental drug overdose at the age of 28 just five months later.
