The Casino Dress Code
Casino dress codes are designed to give everyone at the casino a classy, high-end experience. That often means ‘yes’ to pristine suits, cocktail dresses, and tuxedos, and ‘no’ to ripped jeans and tank tops. While a certain degree of casual is permitted, there’s definitely a conscious limit to what you can wear to a casino.
The dress code isn’t necessarily uniformly enforced across all parts of a casino. In the private poker rooms, away from the main floor, you may be able to get away with more casual attire. You can also dress in a more relaxed manner if you’re just going to stick around the slot machines. However, if you plan to bet on the main casino floor, with all the big games and the gathering crowds, you ought to dress the part.
The Dos And Don’ts Of Casino Attire
If you want to know exactly what to wear to a casino, here are a few rules of thumb to get you started with casino-style dress.
DO Wear Formalwear
If you’re looking for something that is absolutely guaranteed to look good at a casino, then you can’t go wrong with dressing up in white-tie or black-tie attire.
White tie is the kind of getup you’d don at an opera or the Oscars.
Also known as ‘full evening dress,’ white tie requires that men wear a black tailcoat, low-cut white waistcoat, white button-up shirt, and white tie.
Women should wear a long evening gown. Jewellery and gloves are optional, but they definitely complete the look.
You can purchase male white tie outfits and women’s evening gowns at various boutiques and outlets.
Black tie is a somewhat more relaxed dress code. Black bow ties, black low-cut waistcoats, and white dress shirts are a key part of the attire for men, while women can wear cocktail dresses or gowns as they please.
DON’T Wear Sportswear
Athleisure might be ‘in’ at the moment, but no one at the casino will be impressed if you look like Olivia Newton-John circa ‘Physical’ rather than Olivia Newton-John circa ARIA Hall of Fame awarding ceremony.
DO, At Minimum, Wear Smart Casual
If you can’t be bothered to go for a formal look, at the very least wear a smart casual outfit.
For men, this means collared shirts, a jacket or blazer, jeans, khakis or slacks, and clean shoes.
For women, a midi dress, cocktail dress, or office attire such as a top and pencil skirt.
DON’T Wear Graphic Tees
Stick to patterned prints or solid colours for your collared polo shirts. A graphic tee might be funny or self-expressive in some ways, but it’s just not a right fit for a classy space.
For Women: DO Wear Flats
Most casinos don’t expect you to wear heels, and you may find yourself standing or walking around a lot if you’re spectating, so feel free to stick to flats for comfort.
For Men: DO Wear Clean White Sneakers
If you feel that fancy leather shoes will be too restrictive, or if you don’t have access to a pair, then a pair of white or black sneakers will do the trick in a pinch. Avoid bright colours and make sure they’re free from any dirt or stains and no one will make a fuss.
Don’t Wear Ripped Clothing
It’s worth repeating: Do not wear ripped jeans or shirts with holes in them. They might be suitable for wearing outdoors, but there’s a good chance that you’ll be turned away at the door of your favourite casino.
Does Each Casino Have A Special Dress Code?
Yes! Some casinos have specific dress codes that you’ll want to take into account before you visit. Here are some of the top casinos in the country whose dress codes you need to remember.
Crown Casino
Crown Casino, which has holdings in Perth and Melbourne, has a fairly simple dress code. No camo clothing, no ripped or dirty clothes, no offensive T-shirts (yes, inoffensive graphic tees are actually OK!), no singlets or work tank tops, and no sportswear. They don’t allow ugg boots or work boots either.
Star Casino
The Star, a casino that used to be known as Jupiters, has a similar dress code to Crown’s, with the addition that access to the VIP Gaming Room requires a minimum of smart casual attire.
Treasury
The Treasury Casino in Brisbane, like other casinos, doesn’t allow swimwear, camouflage clothing, steel-toed boots or work boots, and headwear. Sleeveless clothing will be judged on a case-to-case basis. Interestingly, they allow rubber thongs – but not after 6PM.
Adelaide Casino
Adelaide Casino forbids torn clothing, gang patches, dirty clothes and shoes, and offensive clothing. In their VIP Premium Area for members, collared shirts, or non-collared shirts with jackets must be worn. Shorts of acceptable length are allowed, but mini skirts are unacceptable attire.
Mindil Beach Casino Resort
Formerly known as SKYCITY Darwin, Mindil Beach has the most relaxed dress code of all, given that it bills itself as a beach resort, restaurant, bar, and casino all in one.
