Why the Queen doesn't take her Xmas decorations down until February

For a very sentimental reason. - by Grace Back
  • 21 Nov 2018

The Royal Family abides by their own Christmas traditions, including weighing themselves before and after meals and opening their gifts on Christmas eve.

Despite it being 'unlucky to leave your Christmas decorations up too long', Her Majesty the Queen follows different rules in a poignant tribute to her late father.

The Queen is said to keep up her decorations until February 6, which marks the anniversary of her father's death.

King George VI passed away at Sandringham, where the royals celebrate Christmas, on that date in 1952.

The Queen tends to stay in the Norfolk estate to mark the anniversary in private with Prince Philip before returning to Buckingham Palace and Windsor Castle.

Despite having her decorations up for so long, Her Majesty still works for everyday except December 25.

There are just two days-a-year when she doesn't receive a red box from the government - containing cabinet documents, telegrams and policy papers to be read and sometimes approved and signed - Christmas Day and Easter Sunday.
