“I’d come to the point where I felt the need to stand up for our friendship. And I felt an urgency to stand up and share the woman behind the incredible talent,” Robyn began.
In the memoir, the 58-year-old described how she first met Whitney when she was 19, while the pair were both working as counsellors at a summer camp in New Jersey.
She added: “We wanted to be together… and that meant just us.”
As Robyn explained, Whitney later ended the “physical” part of their relationship soon after she signed her record deal with Clive Davis at Arista Records.
Whitney apparently said that they shouldn’t continue their physical relationship because it would make their journey even more difficult.
“She said if people find out about us, they would use this against us… and back in the ’80s that’s how it felt,” Robyn said.
The 58-year-old went on to say that she chose to keep their relationship private to protect Whitney, and over the years, she managed to find comfort in her silence.
But she added that she now feels ready to tell her story, saying she just wants to set the record straight about who Whitney truly was.
