Tziporah shock: my years in a homeless shelter
I’m A Celebrity Get Me Out Of Here! contestant Kate Fischer has opened up about living in a women’s shelter for two years following her breakup with business mogul James Packer.
Speaking with Carrie Bickmore during an interview on The Project, Fischer - who now goes by the name Tziporah Malkah – said she was broke and homeless following the pair’s infamous split and believed she had nowhere else to turn.
The 43-year-old’s fall from grace came just years after she shot to fame as a 90’s pinup model and actress in the Hugh Grant movie Sirens. Malkah moved to LA to try her hand at acting, but after little success and another failed relationship that encouraged her to rediscover her Jewish faith, she was forced to return home to Australia.
“I didn’t know anything about homelessness so I thought I had to sleep under a bush so I Googled “Homelessness Melbourne,” Malkah confessed.
She found a shelter which she shared with 20 other women, but found it difficult to speak to others for fear of being recognised.
“I was numb and in shock, I sat on the bed and wept… it was pretty overwhelming,” she said of the day she arrived.
“I just felt so ashamed, and so frightened of being recognised. I was quite reluctant to talk to kind of talk to anybody for quite a long time.”
Malkah went on to stay for 22 months at the refuge, also revealing that her mother, New South Wales mental health minister Pru Goward, was not aware of her situation. Admitting that the pair no longer speak, she added: “It has always been quite a difficult relationship. I respect my mother and I understand my mother… that she is not motherly.”
