The bad news first: it takes just 23 minutes on average for Aussie kids to start asking the dreaded “are we there yet?” question on car trips, according to a recent TomTom survey.

This means our littlies get bored faster than children in other countries.

The good news is there are heaps of ways to make the trip more interesting…

Family games

I Spy, The Alphabet Game (where you name objects starting with each letter) and 20 Questions can help pass the time.

Food

Pack lots of healthy snacks the kids enjoy to offer along the way.

Movies

A cheap portable DVD player or tablet can be a godsend for long journeys.

Simple activities

Colouring-in books and playdough shouldn’t be underrated.

Presents

Wrap up some toys – even some of your tyke’s favourite ones from home – and offer a new present to unwrap now and then.

Even if the toy’s not new, ripping through the wrapping can be excitement enough.
