Christmas can be stressful.
From organising your calendar, fitting in the wish list shopping, and staying on top of your budget can make for one hectic time of year.
So, that's why a huge number of Aussies are turning to secondhand gift giving to ease the stress of this year's shopping bill.
Gumtree Australia has revealed that 65% of Australians are happy to receive second hand gifts, helping loved ones save hundreds off their Christmas shopping bill.
According to Gumtree’s annual Smart Santa Survey, the majority of Australians would be happy to receive a second hand gift this Christmas as Aussies get set to splurge $9.8 billion on gifts this Christmas.
The survey even concluded that around two-thirds of Australians say they'd actually prefer a high-quality or one-of-a-kind second hand item over a low quality, brand new one.
But, many people are turned off by the perceived stigma attached to second hand gifts.
Deborah Balhatchet, a mother of four from Queensland, said turning to online shopping platforms like Gumtree can be "super-efficient".
“When you’ve got kids, Christmas shopping can be a nightmare, so online shopping platforms like Gumtree can be super-efficient, not only financially but practically," she tells.
“I love finding second hand gifts, whether someone’s received a double up, or an item that’s not for them, I can basically get an item in perfect condition for so much less!”
“Depending on the person I’m gifting, second hand gifts can be great for the family or office secret Santa presents.”
“With living prices today, I don’t see why people aren’t resorting to second-hand shopping more often. Whether it’s to make money back or to reduce their Christmas bills!”
“I hate throwing things out, so it’s nice to know items my family and I don’t need are being used by someone else.”
“This year, I’m looking at electronics, toys and jewellery for my four kids for Christmas.”
Kirsty Dunn, spokesperson for Gumtree Australia, commented: “This gift giving season, we’re encouraging shoppers to be savvier with their wallet, while being more eco-conscious and to give a gift that people actually want.
“If you’re looking for a memorable retro toy, a Kris Kringle present or a memorable unique gift that you can’t buy on the high street, Gumtree is the perfect place to find second hand gifts which can often be more meaningful – all whilst saving you dollars and extending the life of items.”
The Gumtree Smart Santa Survey has also lifted the lid on what Aussies really want this Christmas, with unique and retro gifts following close behind clothing as the nation’s top stocking fillers.
Gumtree also narrowed down the top search items in December.
