They’re patiently awaiting the arrival of their first child – and no doubt getting everything ready for the royal baby – but Prince Harry and Meghan Markle won’t be allowed to rely on any of the generous baby gifts they have received.
According to a new report, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex can’t accept any gifts that would put them “under any obligation to the donor”.
The couple are under orders to carefully consider who a gift is from, what it is and where it originated before accepting it as the Royal Family are expected to refuse gifts if they are concerned about the motive behind the gift.
“The fundamental principle governing the acceptance of gifts by Members of The Royal Family is that no gifts should be accepted which would place the Member of The Royal Family under any obligation to the donor,’ states the royal family’s guidelines.
“In this regard, before accepting any gift, careful consideration should always be given to the donor, the reason for and occasion of the gift and the nature of the gift itself.
“Equally, before declining the offer of a gift, careful consideration should be given to any offence that might be caused by such an action.”
The expectant royals are allowed to accept flowers or food, books presented by the author and gifts under £150.(AU$270)
Harry and Meghan politely explained their gift policy via Instagram last week.
“The Duke and Duchess of Sussex are immensely grateful for the outpouring of love and support in anticipation of the birth of their first child,” read a caption accompanying a picture depicting one of the charities they support.
“In lieu of sending gifts, the couple have long planned to encourage members of the public to make donations to select charities for children and parents in need.
“If you already made a donation, the couple send you their greatest thanks.”
