Meghan Markle may be married to a Prince, but the pregnant Duchess is not as high in the royal pecking order as you may think.
According to a royal expert, the former Suits actress must always stand behind her sister-in-law Kate Midleton at official events, and the reason is fairly understandable.
Talking with People, managing editor of Majesty magazine Jo Little explained that despite Meghan’s famous face, she would not feature as prominently at official royal events: “She was not as prominent as perhaps some people might have expected, but there’s a pecking order.”
At Meghan Markle’s first Trooping of the Colour last year, spectators noticed Meghan and Prince Harry placed very poignantly in the background, while Prince William and Kate Middleton appeared at the front of the Buckingham Palace balcony with their children Prince George and Princess Charlotte.
Little explained: “There was no slight intended, but William being the older, more senior brother would go out [first] with his wife.”
This royal hierarchy is not limited to balcony appearances.
The Sun claims that royal protocol dictates members of the royal family must arrive at official outings in order of status, and considering Prince William is second-in-line to the throne and Kate his wife, they must always walk ahead of Meghan and Harry.
