Royal biographer Ingrid Seward reveals in her book Prince Edward: A Biography, there are three months of the year the Queen and her staff leave behind the strict palace life of Buckingham Palace and go with her Majesty to enjoy a holiday jaunt in Balmoral.

Seward claims that the staff enjoy barbecues, dances and fancy dress parties.

In a more revealing statement, the royal biographer writes: “[the royal staff] enjoy their holiday flings, of different kinds, each according to his or her taste, and much to the Queen’s fascination”.

Ms Seward said: “Such were the romps that the staff nicknamed the castle, ‘Immoral Balmoral’”.

Seward goes further and claims that instead of disapproving, the Queen understands that romances will eventuate.

“She does not express disapproval but instead takes a lively interest in the romantic’s comings and goings of her staff”, Seward writes.

We should hardly be surprised, the Queen once said herself: “A good gossip is a wonderful tonic.”
