Upon seeing the Queen walking with her protection officer Richard Griffin, the group struck up a conversation with her majesty as though she was any other 93-year-old.

Mr Griffin shared the following amusing incident with The Times.

The American tourists comically asked the monarch if she lived locally, and when she responded that she did, they asked her if she had ever met Queen Elizabeth II.

Maintaining her anonymity, the Queen pointed towards Mr Griffin – who has worked with the Royal Family for more than 30 years – and said: “No, but this policeman has.”

The group of tourists left shortly after, still not recognising the Queen despite her iconic casual attire of a headscarf and tweeds.

In the documentary Our Queen at 80, Princess Eugenie once said her grandmother was “most happy there.”

“I think she really, really loves the Highlands…walks, picnics, dogs, a lot of dogs, there’s always dogs, and people coming in and out all the time.

“Family-wise we’re all there, so it’s a lovely base for Granny and Grandpa to be.

“And for us to come and see them up there where you just have room to breathe and run.”
