WATCH! How Queen Elizabeth II was the first monarch in 100 years to give birth during reign
Royal watchers have pointed out that Queen Elizabeth is, in fact, the first monarch in over 100 years to give birth while sitting on the throne.
With the birth of Prince Andrew in 1960, Her Majesty made history by being the first monarch since the equally loved Queen Victoria to give birth to a royal baby while acting as the sovereign.
In the documentary The Queen’s Diamond Decades, archived footage shows the incredible moment Queen Elizabeth made history when she gave birth to her third child, Andrew Albert Christian Edward, who would later become the Duke of York.

In the documetary, the narrator explains: “He was the first baby to be born to a reigning sovereign since 1857, and would be second in line to the British throne, instantly overtaking Princess Anne.”
The only other monarch to give birth while sitting on the British throne was Queen Victoria, who gave birth to her last child Princess Beatrice in 1857.
Prince Andrew subsequently named his firstborn daughter with Sarah Ferguson ‘Beatrice’, to honour his great ancestor.
