When the world’s royal families meet, we sit up and take notice.
And on Tuesday, Crown Princess Mary of Denmark and Prince Charles got together to attend the enthronement ceremony of Japan’s Emperor Naruhito, where he officially proclaimed his ascension to the Chrysanthemum Throne, at the Imperial Palace in Tokyo.

The splendid occasion was attended by royalty from across the globe, including Princess Mary, 47, and her husband, Prince Frederik, 51.
Prince Charles, 70, the future King, was without his wife, Camilla Parker Bowles, who had not joined him on the trip to Japan, but he looked cosy as he chatted with Australian-born Mary.
The pair were photographed deep in conversation as they sat next to each other during the ceremony, surrounded by royals and dignitaries from around the world.
Other guests included King Felipe VI and Queen Letizia of Spain, and King Willem-Alexander and Queen Maxima of the Netherlands.
Prince Charles attended the royal event as a representative for his mother, Queen Elizabeth II.
The Duke of Cornwall has taken on a number of extra duties of late as he prepares for his ascension to become King.
Prince Charles is also preparing to pass on his Duchy of Cornwall estate and duties as Duke of Cornwall to his son, Prince William.
Crown Princess Mary is rising through the royal ranks in Denmark as well.
The girl from Tassie was recently given an exciting new honour by her mother in law, Queen Margrethe.
Mary has been appointed to Denmark’s Council of State, which means she now has the power to act as regent in the Queen’s place, if anything happens to her.
Crown Prince Frederik, his brother Prince Joachim and the Queen’s sister, Princess Benedikte are the only other members of the family to hold this honour.
With both Mary and Charles moving up in their respective royal families, there’s no doubt they will have had a lot in common to talk about during the event.
