Butler uploaded the image to his personal twitter account alongside the caption, “Very unusual to see Diana use her nickname on a christmas card!”

Diana’s former chef Darren McGrady revealed to HELLO! that the princess was called ‘Duch’ by her family because “she always acted like a Duchess” when she was younger. McGrady also revealed an exchange he had with Diana one Christmas where, “She came into the kitchen with Sarah Ferguson and ‘Fergie’ called her ‘Duch’. I was surprised because I knew she was a Princess and asked her why she had called her that.”

When asked about the Christmas card, McGrady said, “I doubt very much this would have been sent to anyone other than a Spencer family member or perhaps The Yorks.”

In the 2005 book Diana, Princess of Wales by Beatrice Gormley, it was revealed that Diana hated the nickname of ‘Di’. In the book, Gormley wrote, “Diana was usually friendly and good-natured, but not when she was called Di. ‘Say that again’, she told her schoolmate, ‘and you die. I am Duchess. Duch’.”

Diana is not the first royal to have a personal nickname revealed. Prince William revealed in a 2007 interview with NBC’s Matt Lauer, that his mother used to call him ‘wombat’ saying, “It began when I was two. I’ve been rightfully told because I can’t remember back that far. But when we went to Australia with our parents, and the wombat, you know, that’s the local animal. So I just basically got called that. Not because I look like a womnat, or maybe I do.”

It has also been revealed that Diana used to call Prince Harry ‘ginger’.

Meanwhile, Prince Philip refers to his wife, The Queen, as ‘Cabbage’, ‘Darling’ and ‘Lilibet’.
