Kate Middleton and Prince William’s rocky road to marriage has been well documented.

The now-married couple met when they were at university together, where they quickly struck up a close friendship before it developed into a fully-fledged romance.

But despite a young Prince William loving Kate Middleton, the future King of England remained unwilling to commit to her.

WATCH! Prince William admits he regrets breaking up with Kate Middleton

Here is why.

According to Express.co.uk, The Duke of Cambridge expressed his doubts surrounding Kate on more than one occasion, and according to royal biographer Andrew Morton, the pair split up in 2007 as a result.

“It was a storm that had been brewing a long time, arising from his unwillingness to commit,” Morton wrote.

Then the royal biographer reveals the heartbreakingly unfair reason behind William’s feelings, his friends believing that the man who was second-in-line to the throne was better than Kate.

“And,” Morton continued, “The feeling his friends noted that ‘he could do better’.”

These swirling feelings of doubt played out in a rather ugly fashion and eventually led to the Cambridge’s breakup after they finished university.

A friend of the couple revealed to the royal biographer that their problems all boiled down to William’s commitment issues.

“They had an up-and-down relationship at St Andrew’s because of his refusal to commit.

“He thought he could do better, but realised very quickly what he had given up.”

After William (thankfully) came to his senses, the couple rekindled their romance and now share three kids.

Thank god for that!
