Have Queen Margrethe and Prince Philip been keeping a very scandalous secret romance for more than 50 years?

Painted in commemoration of his retirement, the portrait of Prince Philip was initially commissioned by Margrethe as a nod to his Danish heritage.
But since its release, speculation has run rife that the pair shared a secret romantic spark when they were young royals.
‘People have been talking about the rumours for years and the portrait has done nothing to hose down speculation,’ says a source. ‘The truth is Margrethe and Philip have always been close… so it’s very possible that there was chemistry at one time.’
