Prince Philip is well known for his indiscrete and sometimes appalling outbursts, but the Queen’s husband wasn’t letting his past missteps hold him back when he tore into music megastar Elton John.
The singer has confirmed the details of the encounter in his new book, Me, in which the royal slated him over his garishly painted Aston Martin car at a social gathering.

‘You live near Windsor Castle, don’t you?’ Elton recalls the Prince asking, in his brutally frank new book.
‘Have you seen the bloody idiot who drives around that area in his ghastly car? It’s bright yellow with a ridiculous stripe on it. Do you know him?’
Responded Elton: ‘Yes, Your Highness. It’s actually me.’
According to the singer, the royal was not taken aback at all, and in fact seemed thrilled that he has the opportunity to give some advice.
‘What the hell are you thinking?’ the prince ranted. ‘Ridiculous. Makes you look like a bloody fool. Get rid of it.’
The story comes after Ingrid Seward, who is editor in chief of Majesty magazine, earlier this week revealed an incident involving Philip left the queen “flushed”. The moment is said to have taken place when Philip walked past his wife’s dressing room.
Speaking on the UK documentary Secrets of Royal Dressmakers, Ingrid told of how she’d learned of the occurrence from royal designer Ian Thomas.
She said: “When he was doing the hem, Prince Philip walked through the Queen’s dressing room and said ‘hmmm, nice dress’.
“The Queen flushed scarlet. I always remember him telling me that story.
“She was just so thrilled to get the compliment from her husband,” she revealed.
