They are the royal star-crossed lovers.

Camilla Parker Bowles and Prince Charles met in 1970 at a polo match where it would be love at first sight, 35 years later the pair would finally marry.

While the Duchess of Cornwall and the Prince of Wales faced many obstacles (Charles’ marriage to Princess Diana being one of them) it turns out the biggest hurdle the couple had to face was Camilla’s penchant for taking lovers.

Due to the strict rules governing the royal family at the time, Prince Charles was all but forced to abandon his relationship with Camilla in favour of Princess Diana, whom he married on July 29, 1981.

However, when the fairytale couple got divorced in 1996, Charles would once again vie for his great love Camilla, only to be shut down by the powers that be in Buckingham Palace.

According to Express.co.uk, Camilla was considered an ‘experienced woman’, due to her many lovers and previous marriage, and therefore an ‘unsuitable spouse’ for the future Kind of England.

Royal author Richard Fitzwilliams told the publication: “When Charles fell for Camilla Shand after they met, she would not at that time have been thought suitable as a wife of the heir to the throne as she had had previous lovers.

“She mixed in a similar set to Charles and they were undoubtedly ideally suited.”

Mr Fitzwilliams continued: “He was devastated when he subsequently heard, when abroad serving in the navy, that she and Andrew Parker Bowles had become engaged in 1973, they had had an on/off relationship for years.”

Charles and Camilla married in 2005.
