Prince Charles and Camilla have been greeted by cheering, flag-waving royalists as they did the rounds in Brisbane today ahead of tonight’s Commonwealth Games opening ceremony. And amid the smiles were some interesting comments from the heir to the throne.

The couple visited Old Government House at the Botanic Gardens for their formal welcome, with any worries that the pair might be less than welcome among some Aussies dissipating as thrilled crowds were heard to shout for the couple by name.

A well-known critic of overdevelopment and modern architecture, Charles may have been taking a jab at the city skyline when he told one member of the public how grateful he was to visit the famously lush and shady gardens.

‘Thank goodness the gardens are still here and it hasn’t been built on,’ the prince said.

Camilla also shared her enthusiasm about tonight’s opening ceremony with waiting fans, reportedly telling one:  ‘I hope you’re going to watch the opening ceremony at the Games tonight.’

The couple also created plenty of smiles when they visited Lady Cilento Children’s Hospital.  This is Prince Charles’ sixteenth visit to Australia.
