The Duke and Duchess of Sussex have been running their own social media via the Sussex Royal Instagram account since breaking ties with the Kensington Royal account, which is the official account of Kensington Palace, and the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge.

Meghan and Harry created their own account in April, and follow a mixture of environmental charities, mental health groups and environmentalists, with the couple’s aim to use their platform to highlight issues that are important to them.

“Welcome to our official Instagram; we look forward to sharing the work that drives us, the causes we support, important announcements, and the opportunity to shine a light on key issues,” the couple wrote alongside their first Instagram post.

As well as spruiking the causes that are close to their hearts, they also make family and royal announcements via their page.

The royal couple have added Swedish environmental activist Greta Thunburg to their follow list, making a total of 15 accounts that they now follow and support.

Greta, who describes herself as a 16-year-old climate activist with Asperger’s, is known for speaking out on climate change issues, something the Duke and Duchess of Sussex are becoming increasingly passionate about.

Other accounts they follow are African Parks Network, Elephants Without Borders, Wilderness Foundation, Leonardo DiCaprio Foundation, WWF, Australian Geographic, Rhino Conservation Botswana, anthropologist Dr. Jane Goodall, Ocean Heroes, former New York Mayor Mike Bloomberg, Queen’s Commonwealth Canopy and National Geographic.

However William and Kate’s account is surprisingly missing from the list, despite the Kensington Royal account following Sussex Royal.

Harry and Meghan drew further criticism over their Instagram posts earlier this week, after they were accused of promoting environmental issues on their Instagram page, but not always following their own advice or what’s best for the planet themselves.

While some royal fans commended Harry and Meghan for shining a light on these important issues, others called out the couple for not setting a good example when it came to their own CO2 emissions.

“Wait guys. You can’t fly private jets in your personal life and then post this kind of thing. Either live it or don’t. Truly. Walk the talk. Otherwise it’s hypocrisy,” one follower said.

The royal family have embraced social media of late, with family members running their own accounts becoming more commonplace.

Princess Eugenie has her own popular Instagram account, whereas information about the Queen is posted on the Royal Family account.
