The arrival is imminent and anticipation has already reached fever pitch as the world awaits the announcement of the birth of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle‘s first child, to date referred to as “Baby Sussex”.

But the days of this moniker are numbered, as betting agents in the UK and overseas take their final predictions as to what the royal baby will be called.

Royal correspondents and historians have offered their expertise with many suggesting the Duke and Duchess of Sussex will opt for a traditional royal name like Victoria, Grace, Alexandra, Isabella or Elizabeth for a girl and Arthur, Charles, Albert and James for a boy, the Telegraph UK reports.

Another close contender for a baby girl is Alice, after Queen Victoria’s second daughter who, like Meghan, was a huge patron of women’s causes.

Because Meghan and Harry’s firstborn will be seventh in line to the British throne – and thus unlikely to ever be King or Queen – the couple have the benefit of more freedom with their name choices than Prince William and Kate Middleton had with their brood.

The Cambridges chose classic royal names with historic connection for their little ones George, Charlotte and Louis.

Fans have suggested Diana after Harry’s late mother, after Will and Kate already paid homage to the Princess of Wales by choosing it as one of Princess Charlotte’s middle names.

But Nine Honey‘s royal correspondent Victoria Arbiter believes the couple will go the more traditional route.

“Naming a baby is a tricky business for parents the world over. There’s enormous pressure in choosing a moniker that will stand the test of time,” Ms Arbiter writes.

“One has to consider how it might be shortened or whether it might mean something risque in urban slang.

“The task comes with an added burden for members of the Royal Family.

“They have to consider their offspring’s future role and their place in history.”
