Meghan Markle reportedly embarked on a secret online relationship with UK X Factor winner Matt Cardle just months before her first date with Prince Harry.
According to The Sun, the Duchess of Sussex – then best known as Rachel from Suits – sent messages to the singer in 2015 when she was spending time in the UK after her divorce from Trevor Engelson.
Meghan, 37, is said to have followed the reality TV contestant on social media and showered him with compliments telling him she was “a big fan of his work”, before suggesting they meet up.
A source told The Sun Matt “couldn’t believe a Hollywood star like Meghan would even know who he was so he was very flattered”.
But soon after their exchange began the winning vocalist met his current girlfriend Amber Hernaman and “ended up ghosting” Meghan, the term for ending a relationship by withdrawing from all communication with no explanation.
“It felt like there could have been a connection but the timing was wrong. He didn’t reply to her last message,” the source revealed.
Matt, who credits Ms Hernaman for helping him to beat his drug and alcohol addiction after the X Factor, is now an award-winning West End star slated to front the new production of Jesus Christ Superstar in London this summer.
Meghan and Prince Harry went public with their relationship in June 2016.
The royal couple tied the knot at St George’s Chapel in Windsor on May 19 2018 and welcomed their first child, Archie Harrison Mountbatten-Windsor, almost one year later on May 6 2019.
But before Meghan became a real life royal, she led the life of a Hollywood princess filming dramas and outrageous comedy shows in Los Angeles.
